What he did: Cain starred in Waxahachie's sweep of rival Ennis in the Class 4A Region II area round, the first playoff series of his career. Cain went 2-for-3 with two home runs and six RBIs in a 14-3 victory in Game 1. He pitched a complete game in a 5-1 win to close the series, allowing five hits and striking out nine.

The stats: Cain is hitting .382 with three home runs and 24 RBIs. He is 5-1 with an 0.82 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 42 1/3 innings pitched.

Colton Cain Who is he? The 6-3, 215-pound Cain, 15, is one of the state's top freshmen. He is a left-handed pitcher/first baseman who is Waxahachie's cleanup hitter.

He said it: "I only hit one home run prior to [last week]. So I was just expecting to hit them hard somewhere. On the second one, he threw it up, and I just hit it good."

Coach said it: "He's an even better competitor than he is a baseball player. When we got the lead [in Game 2], he really stepped it up. He doesn't look or act like a freshman." – Matt Webb

Did you know? Cain was called up to the varsity football team late in the season and is expected to start at outside linebacker in the fall. ... Missed several games at the end of the regular season because of a stress fracture in his foot.

Saw this kid throw against the Arlington Heat last summer, he's the real deal.

What the article didn't include was how Brown threw on Saturday after being up in the early morning hours with a stomach virus for most of the night, which subsided then returned when he departed the bus in McKinney. Talk about a competitor and team leader!

ahhh, to be young again!

The scariest thing about Colton is that he's raw. As a pitcher he still has tons of room for improvement... and he's still as close to dominating as they come. He often plays up where just being able to throw hard wont get you by. If he ever develops three really solid pitches, watch out. As a hitter he isn't so raw... he's scary (pitchers point of view).
