Friends,
With a score 1 - 4 in the 6th inning, the 7th inning starts. The visitors already have made some plays (runners on base and so on), but then severe rain comes down. After a while the game is called.

We already noted the score 1-4 as the final result of this game, but what do we do with the statistics of the 7th inning? Do they count or not?

Thanks for your help.

Good question. Depending on the league, you might have different rules, but OBR says all stats count...

10.3 (e) CALLED AND FORFEITED GAMES.
(1) If a regulation game is called, the official scorer shall include the record of all individual and team actions up to the moment the game ends, as defined in Rules 4.10 and 4.11...

I think this is actually a fairly recent change to the rules and in years past (don't know how many), you would've scratched that last few batters in the 7th.

My first draft response contained details about the "suspended" vs. "called" games. It really didn't apply to the question. so I let it go.

But, since we all read this to learn, if a game is suspended, none of this applies since the game will be completed at a later date. All stats will count when the game is ultimately completed.

Basically (Stats can chasitse me for laziness on rules references), if in the situation described, the visiting team had tied or gone ahead in the game (changing the outcome with their at bat in the top of the inning), the game would've fallen into the suspended category.

In this case, they'd have to come back later and finish it and all stats would ultimately count. Only issue would be you having to page back in your book to some rain stained page you can hardly read to finish things up. Only advantage of scoring in pencil is that it doesn't run like ink in the rain.

I like to score in ink because my first observations tend to be my best (despite the fact that I pretend to change everyone's E's to H's offense).
If you can score a game using a pen, more power to ya. I couldn’t do it because I inevitably mark some that needs to be changed, mainly like a ball when it should have been a strike, or vice versa. Umpires are all so different when the call pitches that you almost have to totally focus on them in order to get the call correct, and even then sometimes its tough. I find at least a few times each game I’m hoping he shows the count with his fingers so I can verify it. Wink
Stats,

I share your pain on balls and strikes. Sometimes I score nothing and when they turn and ask what the count is, I have to ask what was the second pitch?

When I don't have any of the electric gear, it's much easier even with a runner stealing. Watch the umpire call the pitch and then worry about the throw at second. If he doesn't make an obvious call, mark nothing and mentally note you're a pitch in the hole. When he shows the fingers, catch up. If a subsequent ball is put in play before you firgure it out, go with what you thought the pitch was.

The pen first came out in club ball where every parent wanted to argue with me about every play. When I started using pen, I could shrug my shoulders and point to the scorebook with everything logged in ink.

Now they're all a little more forgiving and so am I so it all works out.

Showcases are the best, since it's all about "how they looked" not about "how you scored it".
