It kinda sound's like mom and dad might be getting the Dr. to say what's convenient for the kid. However I have seen coaches take it on their selves to work a injured kid hard during practice but not let him play games.

But to answer the question, it's hard to go against the Dr without leaving yourself wide open. If a kid has a bad ankle I like for him to do sit ups, and medicine ball training, while the rest of the team is running!

Not that uncommon even in HS. My son aggravated his hamstring in HS and was still cleared to play games but no additional running until healed. Like Doctor said coach had him stretch or other things during team runs. Flash forward to this year , he is now a R-JR. Displaced bone on top of foot hitting bag. While still cleared to play, though painful, Dr. had him in a boot at times he wasn't playing games or hitting in cage or light defense work, but no hard running or weight lifting with legs until bone popped back in.
