I got into an descion with some on the baseball team here today. They were talking about how many home runs they hit last year and I said "are you going to try and get stronger so you can hit the ball harder this year?" and one of them replied "it doesn't matter how strong you are to hit the baseball far, it just matters how fast your bat speed is". I said back "Sure, but if you get stronger, you will in turn, get faster bat speed though". Both of the players didnt agree and said strength had nothing to do with how far you hit the ball. So all I said back was "why do the best in the world use steroids?" and they both said they didn't know because there is no real reason to want to be stronger in baseball.

So the question I am asking everyone on here is... Do you believe that being stronger will make your bat speed faster and make you hit the ball farther? I believe the obvious answer is that strength helps greatly if you want to hit more home runs.

In Texas high schools, most baseball players do a "football" type workout. Not many off-season lifting programs are customized with "pulling" excercises vs. "pushing" excercises. I also believe the legs, forearms, shoulders, and core muscles are important for baseball players. And, bat speed can be enhanced with strength in those areas.

But, a few years ago I did a study of a BIG X12 baseball program. Interestingly all the double digit HR leaders that year were 300lb(+) bench pressers?? No other quantifiable data, just those two factors were present.

Spring 2011, with BBCOR bats, LCU hit 100 home runs. They have a fulltime, professional strength and conditioning coach in charge of their baseball lifting programs.

I believe! GED10DaD

Sounds like they need an excuse to stay out of the weight room. Davis Love III was quoted once that his dad ( a terrific golf instructor) had not believed in lifting weights. Love III went on to note that since everyone had observed what Woods was able to do, people had been in the weight room more.

Being stronger helps virtually all sports.

The basic gospel is this: Fly balls that you hit go farther if you are stronger. Line drives and grounders that you hit have more velocity when you are stronger.

Your bat speed is higher. And.....because of this, with some practice, you should be a better hitter for average since you can take just a few hundredth of a second longer to "read" the ball.

No one would argue, I think, that being Bigger, Faster and Stronger makes one a better athlete.

However, to Floridafans point; in skill movements that demand exceptional reflex actions, bigger and stronger doesn't always relate to FASTER! Faster, i.e., bat speed has a genetic aspect to it. And don't forget your Physics; speed has an exponential factor compared to mass.

If Stronger is always faster, then every Football behemoth should have superior bat and arm speed BUT that ain't the result you get!!

Any of you guys ever fought? Getting in the ring with the big guys is a cake walk compared to stepping in with a lean, quick, "fast twitch" muscled individual. Although lighter, they hit harder and those punches/kicks are harder to see coming! And if the athlete doesn't have "it," no amount of time spent in the weight room is going to change what IT is he doesn't have!
