I came across a old thread that discussed expected scholarship percentages. It said out of the 11.7 scholarships, 7 are allocated to pitchers, 2 are allocated to catchers, and the remaining 2.7 scholarships are allocated to the infield and outfield positions. It said that percentages were often divided as follows:

Pitchers:
3 @ 80% 2.4 scholarships
2 @ 60% 1.2 scholarships
4 @ 50% 2.0 scholarships
5 @ 28% 1.4 scholarships
14 - 7.0 scholarships

Catchers:
1 @ 80% 0.8 scholarships
1 @ 50% 0.5 scholarships
2 @ 35% 0.7 scholarships
4 - 2.0 scholarships

Infield & Outfield:
2 @ 40% 0.8 scholarships
2 @ 35% 0.7 scholarships
4 @ 20% 0.8 scholarships
4 @ 10% 0.4 scholarships
12 - 2.7 scholarships

Query: Is it correct to interporet these stats to say that if you are a catcher and only offerred 50% or less, you are less likely to see the field?

First of all you are making the assumption that other catchers in this program receive greater scholarships.

The breakdown in your post does not reflect my son's experience over the years, so it is important to understand that this is not a rule of thumb.

If you outplay the other catchers, the amount of scholarship money you receive will not be a factor in playing time.
Its more about 'projection' of the coaching staff. But it also depends, school-by-school. Some pay more than others.

Absolutely true! During my older son's freshman year at a high D1 (Pac-10), the Friday night starter was on the minimum scholarship at that time (books + fees). He was the Friday night starter because he deserved to be...had nothing to do with the scholarship amount.
So you are saying that D1 schools will not give more than 40% to a stud speedy SS or CF?

I think you are trying to simplfy something that is not that simple.

A lot of teams do not give out all 11.7 schollys and I would be willing to bet that the numbers they put out there depends on the talent level of the players no matter what the poistion. Obviously pitching gets the most and then the up the middle positions gert what is left over after pitching.

I just think your model is way off from reallity and tries to simplfy things way to much. I would be willing to bet that there are not many D1 catchers receiving 80%. Not saying there are not any just saying there probably is not very many.
I am not in a position to validate the percentages, but in recent presentation regarding baseball recruiting I did hear that as a general statement, the percentages in scholarships descend in this order: pitchers, catchers, middle players (INF and CF), the corners. The point being made by the speaker was that a corner player should not compare their offer with those being made to players who pitch, catch or play in the middle.

Again, not validating the information, just passing it along.

Also,

My son, who has just recently committed, was told by the coach the best player plays. He did not say the player with the best scholarship plays it is the best player who is performing that plays.

The recruiting coordinator at an Illinois D-I told us precisely this in his presentation to parents and players at a recent showcase. He said once the roster is set it does not matter who is getting how much, or even if they are a recruited walk-on in their program. The best players will play and other than your parents, no one cares how much scholarship money you received. They are there to win.

In the end, the best player will play. I've seen no correlation between scholarship money and playing time.

That being said, there may be something to be said for transfer considerations compared to recruits. That is, to get "Mr. Baseball" (interested in our school from his current situation; JUCO or otherwise), to transfer he may be promised a very "good shot" at a particular position. I have seen scenarios that appears from the onset, to be a situation where the empty position is "theirs to lose" thus the underclass recruit would need to definitely out perform them to gain that spot!

IMO, nothing really wrong with that approach.

I think there are too many variables and too many different approaches by coaches to really develop a "usual" way of dividing scholarship amounts by position other than saying stud pitchers will generally take up a good percentage of the overall monies available. What a player gets as an incoming freshman can change, either up or down at the coach's discretion. Also, as someone stated, that list is out of date on amount of players with scholarships and minimum monetary amounts allowed. I would be surprised if that much is allocated to three catchers and feel a SS or CF would probably get more than the example shows.

Sure the best player will play but common sense dictates there probably IS correlation .... here's why.
We all know coaches compete for talented players and talented players have many options. Coaches are forced to outbid other coaches for this talent. So, normally speaking---- the greater the talent the greater the scholarship.

Having said that I also know that playing time is based on a players ability to produce. BUT... odds are the more talented the player is, the more likely he is to produce. You produce.... You play.
Fungo
True dat Fungo. The catcher at my son's school was also a freshman at the time my son got there. He was actually relatively lightly recruited, until my son's school spotted him. He got an 80% scholly, developed into a high draft pick and three years after the draft was a starter in the national league.
