Not sure if this is the correct location, but none of the others seemed to fit, so figured the General Items Forum was my best bet...

Does anyone have any experience with the Dominican Baseball Camps?

I did a quick search and found someone with many posts just looking for players for a team...

My son has been invited to be part of a team there run by a college coach at one the schools on his list and definitely wants to go. I know there are many benefits both on and off the baseball field to him taking the trip and I'm sure he will be. BUT, I'd just like to get an idea if anyone else's son has done this before I ship him off to the tropics during hurricane season...

Thanx!

Hi.

I don't know anything particular about that organization but maybe I can find out (do you know the owner's name?). When does it start? There are many baseball academies in DR for preparing players to get signed or get a US scholarship.

But check them out as much as you can. Experiencing how baseball is taught in Latin America (if the Academy owners are from DR) will certainly expand your son's abilities and approach to the game, but don't be fooled by the beach pics. He probably won't spend much time there and be prepared mentally for "exotic" living and playing conditions.
We looked fairly seriously into this a couple of years ago. 2B really wanted to go, but we just couldn't spare the cash. We were looking at it for more of a cultural experience than a baseball experience, and definitely not as a recruiting opportunity or anything like that. The guy in charge at that time, Sam LaBeau, was an assistant coach at one of the Virginia schools. Have you inquired to the info@ address? When we looked into it, he was very responsive and happy to answer all of our questions. If LaBeau is still in VA, maybe you could meet in person with him.

Thanks much to all...

2BMom - We're definitely looking at the cultural at least as much as the baseball. TurnTwoSon was invited to play with a team being put together by a college coach who will be taking the team and it is one of the schools on his list. So an opportunity to practice and play with the coach every day for a week works as well as a week long camp from the recruiting stand point.

New2This - GREAT hurricane advice! Cool

If anyone has a son who has done this, I'd love to hear about his experiences. Son and a fellow HS team mate are both planning on the trip...

Restarting this thread from years ago because my 2022 son just received an emailed invitation from an Ivy coach to attend Ivy Week at the DR baseball camp.  @Sammy is still running them, it appears, and I assume that this summer is a return to normalcy after 2020...?

Has anyone out there had a son in recent years who attended the Dominican Baseball Camp during a summer session?  I'm wondering about its value from a strictly recruiting standpoint.

I think it would be a great experience, but I can't see it having much recruiting  value at all, especially with coaches just coming off a year long dead period.  They are going to get out and see the guys they have committed and look at the guys on their lists.  As an uncommitted 2022, I would focus on camps or tournaments where you know your target list will be in attendance.

Yes, @TerribleBPthrower, that's exactly what happened. Emailed the coach, and the next day got the invite back.

One of the coaches (not the RC) of an Ivy that my son IS in fact interested in and has communicated with regularly will be chaperoning the trip for a week, hence our interest.  A full week of games in the DR under the watchful eye of three different Ivy coaches, including one from a target school, seemed like a good opportunity for him to show, but if we can get better bang for a much smaller price by attending schools' individual prospect camps this summer, then so be it.

For folks whose sons have attended one of these -- do the kids have a chance to practice speaking Spanish? I was an exchange student in HS myself, and value that experience to this day (30 years later !?!?!). Unfortunately, being an exchange student doesn't fit my son's baseball goals - if there were a DR baseball exchange with some Spanish thrown in, I'd send him in a second.

I just checked my son’s email and he got it too. Probably a paid list from PG or some other travel org. Here is my son’s email:

I am a baseball coach at Harvard University. I am emailing about a unique opportunity that is available this summer.  I, along with 2 other Ivy league coaches, am putting together a group of high school baseball players to go to the Dominican Republic for a week. The dates of the trip are July 25-31, 2021. You are invited to be a member of this group.

This trip is unique in that you will have the chance to work with a small group of players, Dominican coaches and multiple Division I baseball coaches for the week improving your baseball skills.  We will have regular workouts with Dominican players and play a series of games during the week.  There will be tours, college guest coach lectures and the beach.  In addition, you will have the once in a lifetime opportunity to experience the Dominican Republic - the world's most dynamic nation in terms of baseball (the Dominican currently puts more players in MLB, per capita, than any nation including the U.S.) We will visit one of the MLB Dominican Academies during the trip for a practice session with the KC Royals academy coaching staff.
We will be training and competing at an intensity and pace similar to college and pro baseball.  This is a very good opportunity for those interested in playing college baseball. The trip goals are to: 1) Improve as a player with the help of the Dominican and College coaches 2) Get a unique cultural experience and see how the rest of the world lives and 3) Have fun.
