The expected showdown between James River and Midlothian turned into a laugher, as JR won 12-1 in a 4 1/2 inning slaughter rule victory. A.J. Prill threw five innings, homered and drove in 3. Trey Wray also homered. Austin Stadler went 2-2 with a walk, 3 runs and 3 RBI.

With the win, James River took a 3 game lead over both Midlothian and Cosby. With only 3 games remaining, and JR having the tie breaker over both by having swept both season series, JR has clinched the regular season title and will advance to the Central Region tourney.

No report yet on the other significant matchup, Monacan at Cosby.

Clover Hill and Manchester got the easy wins over Huguenot and Wythe. Bird was idle.

First Cosby led, then Monacan, then Cosby, then Monacan tied it in the top of the 6th. But Cosby took the lead back in the bottom of the 6th to win a see-saw battle, 4-3. Ronnie Shaban (C) and Brant Jones (M) each had complete games.

The win clinches a playoff spot for Cosby, probably the biggest surprise of the season, going 9-3-1 in district despite having no seniors. The loss all but eliminates defending state champ Monacan from playoff contention.

By the time Thursday's games are done, playoff slots may all be clinched, though exact seeding of the 2-3-4 teams remains up in the air. Right now it's Midlothian (10-3), Cosby and Manchester (8-4-1).

Up to date standings:

1. James River 13-0
2. Midlothian 10-3
3. Cosby 9-3-1
4. Manchester 8-4-1
5. Clover Hill 7-6
6. Monacan 7-7
7. L.C. Bird 4-9
8. Huguenot 1-13
9. Wythe 0-14

Monacan, Huguenot and Wythe have the remaining three byes, everyone else has three games remaining.

I don't know under what circumstances they would have Cosby and Manchester play off their 0-0 tie from last Thursday. It does not appear that game would affect who makes the playoffs, but it could affect seedings and thus, matchups.
