Can anyone confirm the schedule (dates, times, places, matchups)?

Are first round games at home sites of higher seeds, or at a tourney site? (Cosby?)

I'm thinking the opening round would be:

# 3 James River v. # 6 Monacan
# 4 L.C. Bird v. # 5 Clover HIll

(Midlothian not in the tourney)

Someone please confirm that for me in case I have the seedings wrong.

Second round would then be # 2 Cosby vs. jR-Monacan winner, # 1 Manchester v. LCB-CH winner. Do I have that right?

I would say that's an upset. Monacan has had quite a struggle this year, so this win is a big plus for the end of their season. JR has suffered from youthful errors all season long, but to score only 3 runs indicates they came in flat. Either that or the Monacan pitcher (Bays?) had the best game of his season.

But I didn't see the game. Did anyone here see it?

Did LCB use both Kaufman and Conner for its game, or did they manage to save one for tomorrow?
Kaufmann pitched the entire game for Bird so they will have Conner and Lohr to throw at Manchester.
Monacan players came out hitting big yesterday and Bays kept the JR hitters off balance all game. Very effective and efficient against them. I'm not sure who they have left to throw at Cosby today, but they have to be pumped about the win against JR.
Yes, James River was flat. Bays was hitting spots and keeping the young JR hitters off balance. They did not know what was coming, and a few were popping up consistently early in game with the wind at their face. IMO they did not adjust to seeing Bays the second & third time through the line up. Monacan was agressive and had some really good at bats that led to extra bases and RBIs. Monacan also pressured the young JR pitchers/catcher when they got someone on base resulting in many more fastballs than they would have normally seen. Hats off to the Monacan battery for pitch calling and execution.

Monacan outplayed James River in every aspect of the game, and then put them away in the 7th. They picked a good time to get their fourth win of the season. I don't know who their second pitcher is but we're about to find out.

LCBird has Hunter Lohr and Nick Connor (and the kitchen sink) available to pitch today.

There is no specific criteria to be COY. The coaches vote on it just as they do for players. Most of the time it goes to the Coach of the Regular season champ. Every now and then we have a situation like the one we are speaking of and it ends up being a coach who didn't win the title. To be fair to River's coach, he didn't win it either year his teams' won state titles. Kind of ironic...
On a different note, I have a question about who advances to the regional tourney.

I know that since Manchester was the regular season champ, they move on no matter what.

The second team to move on is whoever plays Manchester in the final or whoever wins the tournament Thursday if the Manchester bus can't find the Cosby field today? Big Grin
It wouldn't surprise me if someone did honor Coach Schu on sort of an accumulated basis, given that he has missed out to others in his first three years as head.

This year may have been his best job yet, given that they start 7-8 freshmen and sophomores and they finished THIRD (not fourth) in the district.

These votes are taken before tournament play, so that didn't factor in.

James River should contend next year. By 2012, they have a chance to dominate the region along the lines of what Manchester did this year.
The first state championship he won was impressive- some could argue the work had already been done and he had to just not mess it up ! Smile

I guess even if that is the opinion sometimes not messing with what works is an accomplishment in itself

However, when they won the second one THAT WAS IMPRESSIVE. Made alot of people take notice and realize this coach is the real deal...too bad he wasnt rewarded with recognition....my guess is he would tell you the ring(s) he probably has is recognition enough

Who was coah of the year in that District the year he won his second state championship back to back?
The 2007 JR team was just flat out loaded. Though the two pitchers most relied on were juniors then, the rest of the team was hip deep in quality seniors. There were no weak links on that team. Lowery won COY that year, though, due to his having built Cosby into a contender in its first year, despite having absolutely no seniors at the school in 2007.

The 2008 JR team struggled as a lot of new guys suddenly found themselves starters. They hit their stride late in the regular season and put together a winning streak to win the state championship. Lowery again was COY as Cosby won the regular season title and JR, at the end of the regular season, appeared to have had an inconsistent year to that point. Frankly I thought then that the Cosby team was more talented top to bottom and had it not been for the weather disruptions to the state quarterfinal round games, Cosby might well have won it all. But weird things happen in single elimination.

Last year JR had almost nothing returning and yet came within an out of making the regional tourney after finishing second in the regular season. If anyone had any lingering doubts about Schu's ability to mold a team, 2009 should've put them to bed.

This year was really a year for building experience among a strong group of young players. I can definitely see them rising high the next two years, maybe even for a 3-year run. One thing they definitely will have is 2 top quality pitchers in Kirby and Roberts. Kirby is a sophomore lefty running 87-89 with a nasty curve and more. Roberts is only a freshman but already 87-89 with strong arm-side run and developing secondary stuff. Both play tough travel schedules from June through October, so both figure to progress well year to year going forward. Should be good years for Rapids fans. Expect lots of college and pro scouts in the stands, RADAR guns blazing.

And that's to say nothing of the young stud bats they have. I don't know where sophomore Collin Lawless' average wound up, but it's sky high. Mac Caples hit a bunch of HR's, and is the first freshman I've ever seen bat cleanup for a contending varsity team.

To be fair, I don't see where Cosby or Manchester are going to fall back, either, so the next few years could make for some great contests to watch. I'm just glad they moved starting times back to 4:30 so I can get to a few games here and there.
I still can't believe LCBird came back in the top of the 7th to steal that game. If I wasn't there myself, I would not have believed it. As the old saying goes....."that is why they play the game". Two upsets so far in the District tournament, could there be more?

I'm glad to see the final will mean something as either team has to win to advance.
Fenway,

How many pitches did Kaufman throw on Monday? From what I read it sounded like he had a pretty efficient outing that day.

I'd think LCB would prefer to get what it could out of him and then close with Conner, but that all depends on whether Kaufman is good to go/safe to go.

Game time decision maybe?

If both guys are good to go, then LCB has a real shot with a full game's worth of strong pitching to put out there. The key for them is to turn in a 21-out defensive effort. If they do that it can be a dog fight. If they don't, it can be a Cosby romp.

BTW, somebody needs to stand up and notice that Bryce Harman kid. 2 hits Monday, 4 on Tuesday, only a freshman folks!
Is the Dominion District tournament the only one where the second regional bid is on the line?

In central Matoaca and Dinwiddie are in

In colonial DSF and Godwin are in

Not sure about Capital- Think i heard LD lost so maybe that one is up in the air?

Alot of baseball left to be played in teh Dominion it seems.

I assume Cosby has all its pitching to work with?
I imagine LCB's # 1 pitcher will see limited pitches after a 100+ outing on Monday- may be safe to get an inning or two from him...that even questionable after two days-
Likely starter has to be Conner then fill in the middle and try to get #1 on the mound to finish it.

Who does Cosby have available? Someone said they used their #1 yesterday to beat Monacan
