both of whom have a tendency to crash and burn in the regionals. The "glass half-full" version would be that one of them will at least advance this year as opposed to having them both disappoint in the first round again.

As for the Bird pitching situation - just one of those games where the bats and gloves are going to have to carry a larger load and hope for just enough pitching to keep it close.
JMO,

I share your optimism on Manchester/Matoaca. At least one will advance.

Both Cosby/Bird games were close this year. Cosby won 1-0 in a pitchers duel between Mooney-Kaufmann. In the other game, Bird had substantial late lead that was squandered. Cosby is most defintely favored. It will take Bird's best focus & execution of the year to win, but they are playing with "house money". They will be loose. No one expected them to be in this position. As I stated earlier, "this is why they play the game".

Maybe, we'll see you out there.

I wouldn't even necessarily pick Hanover to win the Capital District tourney. They used both of their best pitchers (Smith and Childress) to beat Atlee. Both went 3 or 4 innings, and Henrico is a very good team. Henrico used its #1 (Mansfield) but both Bateera and Prentiss are capable arms. Hanover topped Henrico twice (11-7 and 6-1) this season, but I'm going to go out on a limb and pick Henrico.

Also, Cosby used Mooney to beat Monacan, so they'll be without their #1. I'm sure Cosby has more capable arms, but I would think with Conner and Kauffman available, Bird may have the pitching advantage. With that said, I'll take Cosby to find a way to win.

My predictions would mean:

Cosby @ Dinwiddie
Matoaca @ Manchester
Henrico @ Freeman
Godwin @ L-D

I'll take Cosby, Manchester, Godwin, and Henrico (my big upset I guess). Knowing how my picks typically go though, Bird and Hanover will probably blow me up tonight.
I would say - first round of regionals, if they stack up like that, would be...

Cosby, Manchester, Freeman, Godwin

Do not know which winners would play which in second round....

Cosby/Freeman
Manchester/Godwin

Dont know who Cosby has left for today- I would say LCB has Conner for as long as he can go...Kauffman may have a couple fo innings left- either at the end or beginning- the kid will probably want the ball but 100 pitches 2 days ago is alot
Cosby has plenty of arms left. Birnbaum turned in a gem recently, Diesel and others have thrown reasonably well all year.

I would think LCB would start Kaufman if he could go at all. He's been their # 1 all year. Get what you can out of him and then go to Conner. It seems Conner does better in the late inning situation anyway. LCB's best performances this year have been in games Kaufman started and Conner closed.

2 days off between starts is short rest, but far from unheard of at tourney time. I just hope he threw less than 90 pitches on Monday.

Well, that game turned out to be less fun to watch than hoped. Both pitchers were way off their games. In the end, LCB ended up with some quizzical defensive alignments and Cosby just took over. Nice job by Carpenter to restore order and make it a calm win in the end.

I left around the time LCB replaced its experienced RF with a guy who then played dodge ball with two routine flies in a single inning. It just didn't look like a championship game at that point.
my guess is all th eteams pitch their #1 pitchers
matoaca - Ramsey
henrico mansfield
Manchester-Morrison
Cosby-Mooney
Godwin- Lees
Lee Davisd-Boze
Dinwiddie- King
Freeman-do not know the kids name.

This is no time to get cute or save anyone..winner advances to the Diamond with a chance to get in the final

Bigger question here may be who has the best #2 pitcher that would go in round two?

thunder storms could be a factor this week -- if a game gets postponed tomorrow could make it harder for pitchers to return by saturday. Example could be Mnachester/Matoaca getting their early game in- winning pitcher gets to rest then late game gets pushed ahead giving that teams pitcher less time to recover for Fri/Sat

Would be nice if this tournament was all at one location...fans could see all the games and rain would effect everyone the same instead of some teams playing and some not.

How about all fours games at the same time at one location like the Virginia SPorts Complex? What a great event that would be!
I think the sophomre, Stephen Godfrey, has been Freeman's # 1 this year.

Any time you go into an elimination game with less than your best on the hill, you're asking for trouble. I can't see anyone holding a guy back for the next game. That's a good way not to have a next game.

The interesting thing is that if a team can build a big lead, they might pull a starter while his pitch count is low enough actually to consider bringing the guy back for the semifinal. With that game being a day later than in recent years (Friday instead of Thursday), it may be possible for a team to ride just one guy to states.
