Like IEBSBL said they are used to it and you are not. Our first game is way better than our second. I tried last game to get my pitcher to eat during the 5th inning but he was still tired from sitting in the heat. I think next one we play I will have them not show up for the first game. I was just wondering any anybody has a lot of double headers and how you might keep your team as effective in the second game as they do in the first.
Our league has scheduled mostly double-headers for the past few years due to transportation costs and budget reductions. There's not really a strategy advantage because all the teams are playing double-headers. We just have to make sure the pitchers and catchers get enough rest. And all players are provided a light snack between games.

The pre-game mentality should be to throw everything you've got mentally, physically, and tactically into winning the first game.

Anticipate using all the gas in the tank for game #1. Run on fumes in game 2.

In you own mind, you should be thinking, 'there's no tomorrow'--(there's no second game)

If it gets out of hand, then change your mindset. We'll choke down some energy bars and hit the re-set button.

However, in a double-elim tournament (usually non-HS), if you are the winner's bracket team needing to win one out of two in a doubleheader championship, the stated goal to your players is that we have to come locked and loaded to play a doubleheader today, and if we're fortunate to win the first game, we'll cancel the second one.
