Question, my son is a high school senior in the midwest and will play college ball at a divsion 1 in the same area starting this coming fall. He is also recieving a few pro team questionaires to fill out. I want to know if anyone has information on the term, "draft and follow" and just how this works?

Thank you.

She's right... and someone please correct me if I'm off here...

It used to be where if you got drafted out of HS, and the offer was not thrilling (moneywise), you could go off and play Juco, and the team that drafted you, could watch you play the first college year and sweeten the deal up until just before the following year's draft. Now if you don't sign by August 15 (?) you are no longer the property of the drafting team and just go back into the Draft the next year.

If you step foot on a 4 year campus though as a student, you are not eligible again for 3 years...

AD,
You were right all the way up until your last statement...

And that I am a little surprised at, since your team just lost its best returning pitcher to the exception to the rule.

You cannot be drafted after starting at a D1 until your Junior year or you have turned 21 years old (and I believe you can turn 21 by August 15).

For the uninitiated...
Navy's Oliver Drake wasn't eligible for the Naval Academy right out of HS so he attended the Navy prep school for one year (not an uncommon route for admission). This means that by the end of his sophomore year, he was 21. At a service academy, you may leave the academy at any time up until the first day of your junior year without owing any military commitment.

Where it gets interesting, is that Navy was the force behind having the Army's Pro Service option for athletes rescinded just last year. With Drake seeing that, he opted to let it be known he would go pro since Navy was drawing such a hard line on Academy graduates being allowed an exception to play pro ball. Hence Drake was drafted and signed by the Baltimore Orioles...and Navy without its best returning pitcher.

Nick is at WP right now, awaiting orders, but getting ready for ST. He's in a bit of a different boat than everyone else, because he already has a year of active duty under his belt. It looks like he's going to get assigned military, but who knows.

He did finish the season last year.

Milan Dinga, who was drafted with Nick Hill in 07, was at AAA with the Angels when he injured his throwing shoulder again and is currently on rehab assignment at WP after his second labrum surgery.

Cole White, drafted 08, is still at WP as the Grad Asst., but will be assigned to a military unit in March, I believe.

Drew Clothier and Chris Simmons, also 08 draft picks, are with their military units and did not finish the season with their ballclubs.
