Diddling around here killing time at lunch, thought I'd see how the one player drfated last year from my son's school did over the summer.....but as it turns out, he was not placed with any MiLB affiliate of the team who drafted him. After checking with my son, who is still in touch with the guy, he is simply reporting in March, almost a full year after being drafted (27th round, after JR year of college). He's just been working out on his own all this time.

Is this unusual? I thought guys who signed would be placed in Rookie or A right away and start getting after it. Maybe things are different nowadays???

When did he sign with his team? Our guy who was drafted didn't sign until late July / early Aug (really near the deadline) and he didn't report to Rookie ball because it was pretty much over. He did report for instructional work in September / October and spent two weeks in the Dominican at the facility down there. They called him in in January for the optional things they have and then he will report this month for pitchers and catchers.
LOL no problem and glad I could help. Even if he was working out on his own it would still be under the supervision of his team. I saw our guy for the first time in several months about two / three weeks ago and he has totally changed. He played for us with about 25% body fat and he's now down to 14%. It's amazing what they can do with these kids.

Wow. 25%? I could still play...
Krak,
This is a good topic, I will tell you why.

If the player was sitting at home waiting for an increase in his offer and not playing, he is already behind. It's important that once a player decides to go pro to do it quickly, of course now they do have to sign by July and I think that is a good thing. Agreed it's a bit different for a first rounder but a 27th rounder should have signed asap. Hopefully maybe he got in on fall instructional, where staff is able to put a face to a name. This is very important.

Just an FYI, pro players workouts are on their own, no one gives you a manual, most will give a throwing schedule but you are basically left to your own devices to train.
