Drafted = Offer?

Yes, no offer in 14 days (I think that is the right timeline) and the player is a free agent. If I am in error someone will correct me.

If I recall correctly, the club must tender a contract to the draftee within a defined period after the draft. If they fail to do so I believe they lost the rights to the player. I think that became an issue a few years back when Boros used that requirement and a club's missing it to get more leverage.

Makes sense. The clubs have to make an offer to keep their rights but if they only selected a player as an organizational player and decide later that they don't need him they can skip making an offer. The player becomes a free agent but then so are all those players who are eligible but weren't drafted.

The only time it happened 1996 Bobby Seay right were given up by the white sox and was declared a free agent and went on the open market.

MLB found out 20 other players same thing happened. Only 5 actually became free agents.

But Matt White got $10.2 million on the open market and Travis Lee $10 million.

What is the advantage to a team of NOT drafting a player, and then signing him later as a free agent? I'm hearing about this happening quite a bit today - kids who sat glued to the radio hoping to hear their name, being totally disappointed, then being solicited to sign a free agent contract.

How does it work for players that are drafted to be Draft And Follow? Is there specific agreement made between the club and player for DNF?

Thanks..I didn't want to appear to be a braggart and reveal the "upper crust" salary of $1,100 per month that my son will be getting.

thanks fungo for the updated, they finally raised 1st year salary, was 850 for about 20 years.it was 850 last year

yes, they must tender and offer within the first 14 days or else you are a free agent. and the Minor League Salary now is $1,100 a month. I saw the contract just yesterday, its definately $1,100 a month. And NO i havent signed it yet! I may soon though.

The salary for first year players is $1,100 per month ... and that is only while they are actually playing during the season and post-season, and does not include spring training. I beleive that AA is a $1,500 and AAA around $2,250.

Wow, I can hardly stand those big bucks ... guess my kid won't be buying me a Hummer anytime soon ...

that is before taxes and you have to find place to live too. NY penn league players were paying about $300 a month for rent in burlington, VT. Glad to hear they finally gave players a raise an extra $250 a month makes big difference

Do the contracts include paying for college if the player is cut or is out of baseball????

Hacker, some do and some don't. It is part of the contract negotiation. MLB does have a program to pay an amount negotiated betweeen the club and player for college. It also provides the player must begin college with 2 years,I believe, of the time their professional baseball career ends. Last I read, only about 8% of the players with this scholarship protection in their contract actually take advantage of the program.

It is totally negotiable. Infieldad is correct. Once you start school the clock starts ticking. You have to go 8 straight quarters if you stop you lose the money. If you are taking classes in the fall while you play, the clock starts ticking. The only reprieve is if you are assigned in the fall to a fall league or playing in an overseas league.
