If you could select 1 player per position for one unltimate Championship game, and the players could come from any era, who would the be and why?

My list:

CYogi Berra
I know Bench may have been better, but Berra's a winner.

PChristy Matthewson
This guy had 3 World Series shutouts in 6 days! How could I NOT pick him?

1BLou Gehrig
He was dying of ALS and still dominated for the Yankees until he was nearly dead. That type of player can start for me any day.

2BBill Mazeroski
Joe Morgan should've been a no-brainer, right? Wrong. I'm picking a team to win 1 game, not the Best of All Time. Maz won't make an error, and in 1960 had one of the greatest clutch hits ever.

SSDerek Jeter
A winner, a clutch performer. The Play, in that ALDS. How do you spell Championship in baseball? J-E-T-E-R.

3BBrooks Robinson
I'm takin Brooks. He played so well on offense and defense for some of the great Oriole teams. The Human Vacuum Cleaner get my vote.

RFBabe Ruth
Do I honestly need to explain???

CFWillie Mays
He hits. He fields. He throws. He runs. He wins. He starts.

LFJoe DiMaggio
I know Joe D. was a CF, but he wasn't as good as Mays. He beat out Williams for my 3rd OF spot because the were both great hitters, and you can't beat DiMaggio's defense.

ManagerJohn McGraw
Tough guy who won a lot. I'd trust him with my supersquad any day.

I bet there'll be arguements galore, but I'll just say this, if you show me a team that could beat these guys, I'll show you some guys on roids.

What do you think?

you and i are an interesting contrast. clearly you are a yankee fan, while i'm a sox fan. i agree w/ willie mays and the babe. brooks robinson and lou gehrig are good picks at positions where it's tough to pick a clear-cut #1. however i strongly disagree w/ your other 5 choices. here's why:

1. yogi berra and derek jeter. i'm putting them together because you chose both of them because they were winners. it amazes me how certain players are considered stars simply because they have won championships. how can you fail to understand that it takes SOOOOOOOO much more than one player to win a championship? how about the other 24 guys on the team, coaches, management, ownership, etc.? jeter and berra won championships because they were on dominant teams. sure they both did well but it took a whole lot more than one guy to win it all. in many ways tom brady is new england's version of jeter. pats fans fail to realize that those 3 rings are a product of 53 players, coaches, trainers, owners, etc. sorry for going on and on and on but i wanted to emphasize that point. i would go with Bench at catcher and A-Rod at short (if you can put Joe D. in left, i can put arod back where he belongs).

2. Joe DiMaggio. this is red sox vs. yankees at its best. two problems w/ your arguement- first you fail to realize that teddy ballgame was clearly a better hitter than dimaggio. also how do you know how dimaggio would play in left? i'm sure he would do fine, but Ted was a corner outfielder. i'm takin ted williams in left.

3. Bill Mazeroski. you've gotta be kidding me! his WS homer in '60 was maybe one out of ten in his career. sure it was clutch, but one hit doesn't make you clutch. at least jeter has been good in the clutch multiple times. indeed Mazeroski was not a good hitter at all, so don't sugarcoat it. he mighta been the best defensive 2b ever, but joe morgan was very good in the field and was a much, much better hitter. Joe Morgan IS a no-brainer.

4. Christy Matthewson. i feel strongly that yesterday's pitchers do not face nearly the same competition as do today's. when Matthewson pitched he was dominant, no question. but at that time the 7 and 8 hitters on every team were automatic outs, as well as the 9 hitter (the pitcher). that means one third of the lineup is automatically out, whereas today pitchers face solid lineups 1-9. that's why i'm taking roger clemens, a guy i dislike very much. but i must admit he was incredible for 20+ seasons at a time when hitters owned baseball.
I'll take Berra over Campanella any day.

Robinson/Mazeroski??? Good point...That's a tough one. I think Maz was better on defense, which is what I'd want at 2B.

As far as pitchers, you could take Gibson or Seaver, or Feller but also Ryan, Clemens, Koufax, Spahn, Johnson, Young, Ford, Drysdale, Maddux, etc. etc. etc. Still, I have no doubt that Matthewson would win for us.

Other guys who could be picked would be Musial, Williams, Aaron, Snider, Griffey, Jackson, Dickey, I mean, you could go on forever.
yankee...You must live near Yankee Stadium. Get out and see the world.

rhp. Nolan Ryan
lhp. Steve Carlton
c. Johnny Bench
1b. Stan Musial
2nd. Joe Morgan
ss. Ernie Banks
3rd. Mike Schmidt
of. Barry Bonds...likely the best hitter and offensive player of all time
of. Henry Aaron...put up "numbers" when no one cared about "numbers"...now too many players only play for "numbers"
of. Mickey Mantle...thunder from both sides of the plate
dh...Babe Ruth...all he could do was hit for the last 10 years of his career.
06RHP86-
you make some good points there about juicers. however i'm not going to include them still simply because they cheated and that's wrong. in that case i would also have to exclude guys like gaylord perry(not that i picked him for my team) because he admitted that he threw a spitter.

josh gibson- a good one i hadn't thought of. he was supposedly the negro leagues version of babe ruth. i've revised my team and i've put together a batting order- here it is:

1. 2b Joe Morgan
2. SS Alex Rodriguez
3. LF Ted Williams
4. RF Hank Aaron
5. C Josh Gibson
6. CF Willie Mays
7. 1B Stan Musial
8. 3B Mike Schmidt
9. P Roger Clemens
C- Josh Gibson
1B- Babe Ruth
2B- Jackie Robinson
3B- Alex Rodriguez
SS- Derek Jeter
RF- Hank Aaron
CF- Willie Mays
LF- Barry Bonds
DH- Ted Williams

RHP- Roger Clemons, Walter Johnson and Bob Gibson
LHP- Randy Johnson and Sandy Koufax
Middle Relief- Tom Seaver
Closer- Mariano Rivera

Even with the Babe moving to first, I bet that team would essentially be unbeatable.
