I was excoriated once in private because I started a thread about Elton John. I like music and that was the end of my thought on the subject until I got yelled at.

Tonight on Times Square, I liked Chris Daughtry. I thought Fergie had a nice vibe with Black Eyed Peas. I thought J Lo stole the show however.

I agree CD. Although I feel that the Black Eyed Peas are very predictable and every one of their performances I've seen are exactly the same. Could just be because they are ALWAYS on television. J Lo's outfit was...interesting...and her performance I felt was the most genuine. As she said, as a native New Yorker it was her first time in Times Square for New Years Eve and you could tell she performed with excitement.

I skipped through a bunch of the channels up until the ball dropped (Fox, NBC, ABC) so I don't remember which channel had what performer. Sean Kingston performed in Las Vegas and was absolutely terrible. Jay-Z performed in New York with Rihanna and although I like Jay-Z, I didn't really think his performance was very good either. Kris Allen, who I hadn't had too much experience in listening to previously (not an American Idol fan) was very good, IMO.

It's probably tough for the event planners to choose who to get to perform, being that they event must appeal to such a wide demographic. I listen to a bit of everything so I don't mind having hip-hop performances. I know my dad, however, would much prefer classic rock selections. I think it would be in the event's best interest to select a more wide variety of musicians to perform at events like this. I'm sure most wouldn't turn it down (global exposure), and I'm sure more viewers wouldn't turn the channel off when a certain genre came on that they were not a fan of.

You missed the real entertainment. By the end of the night I was singing with the band. I did California Dreaming and Hey Jude. Good thing people's hearing was clouded with champagne. And the silly hat has to go. With all the top hats I thought I was at a Slash look a like convention.

In the area of performance, no one tops Shakira. Absolutely phenomenal - and so engaging. It's nice to see a performer smiling her way through a song/dance and truly enjoying herself.

For performance-ART, no one working right now tops Lady Gaga - like her or leave her, she is intensely creative - and very talented. Folks may not like her content, but it cannot be denied that she really puts on a SHOW.

TR, as a music man, I'd really be interested in your take on these two ladies.
No evidence thank god! I'm awesome in the shower. It just doesn't sound the same with an amplified microphone. Just glad my kids weren't there to see it. I'm no TR (Top) Hits.

Actually, now that my head is a little clearer probably the high point was about ten of us singing White Rabbit with the band. The band played an hour longer than usual. The last hour after midnight was a lot of fun. And we almost stayed home.

Just to be clear for Krak - I was not arguing that J Lo is the grreatest entertainer out there. I was only suggesting it for last night in comparison to Chris Daughtry and Black Eyed Peas who were on Dick Clark's Rockin Eve.

If you are asking me who is currently the best, it is Terry Fator hands down imho.

Have to disagree here Krak - I think she's a gimmick singer with what she sings about and how she acts in interviews and offstage stuff. She appeals to young men (and dirty old ones) with her content because of it's ***ual nature and her attire. If you like her then more power to you and hope you enjoy her but my personal opinion is I'm not very fond of her.
.
Here is the sorry problem now adays in entertainment...talent is not enough.

Most all have to be incredibly talented to get to this level...Problem is talent is not enough...they have make themselves a gimmick/schlock (skin/flash/controversy/tabloids...) to get on the map...once they have made it then then can drop the act and revert to talent.

Problem is that all that gimmick/schlock makes many of us shake our heads and immediately dislike them, talented or not. Often hard to see through all the gimmick.

I agree with ClevelandDad. Terry Fator is not only the greatest entertainer these days, he's one of the best ever!

Anyone who wants proof go watch the many youtube videos featuring Terry Fator.

PG - thanks for the shout out for Terry. I agree with you that he is one of the best ever. I am not sure if there is anyone else who can appeal across all generations at the same time and in the same audience. His vocal range is unbelievable and yet he does it as an outstanding ventriloquist. He brings his characters to life in the most entertaining of all ways. OB44 - I know what you are lamenting but with respect to Terry, talent is more than enough imho.

Here is another favorite of mine:

Sonny & Cher by Terry Fator
It's Official! I am certifiably old and out of touch ... and darn glad of it. As the ladies and the youths surfed through the New Year's shows, and listened to the Hip-Hop stuff that sounded to me like a bad sound check, I resigned myself with comfort that I am out of touch.

I grew up seeing Elton John, Billy Joel, Earth Wind & fire and the Eagles in their hay-day. In college it became Lynard Skynard, Charlie Daniels, Marshall Tucker and Aerosmith. Now there are some performers.

For my money, today's Pop and Hip-Hop acts don't measure up. SP_son and I will stick with our southern rock.

Want to see a show that measures up with the all time greats, go see Montgomery Gentry perform. We just saw them again at the American Freedom Festival ... a terrific show.

And some great walk-out songs for Pitchers Smile

Here's another of his performances - a duet:

Julie - he does all kinds of duets. In addition to the Sonny & Cher above and Nat & Natalie Cole here is:
Louis Armstrong and Kermit
Dan, I love that one! Two of my favorite musicians of all time: Kermit and Louie Armstrong.

Here he is on Letterman:

P.S. Dan, I see I missed your links on the first page earlier - Great stuff, and you had already linked to the Letterman clip.
P.P.S. Guess I was a little rattled on page 1 by RJM's shower remarks. Razz

I am appreciate entertainers like Pink and Lady Gaga. They show a alot of imagination, talent and passion. Kinda like the rock and rollers from the mid 60's in that then don't let the old conventional mindset stop them from their creativity. They believe in what they're doing and just do it. Just like Nike.

I saw a special on Pink. She knew what she wanted at 13 and didn't let record executives mold her into something she wasn't. Wouldn't mind my son being that head strong and successful because of it.

It's always the next generation that going to ruin the world!
Hi Krak -- Thanx fur the spellin help. I never wuz two good at that. Much better wid my cipherin'. Smile

fills -- I do have to give folks credit and respect for chasing their dreams, and choosing the road less travelled. Imagine what our lives would be like if Edison, Ford and others had not blazed their own trails ... but, musically, I just can't follow some of the new trails.

For the Terry Fator fan club ... That guy has talent in layers. Doing spot-on impressions of classic vocal performances, via ventriliquism (sp?) ... that would be kind of like Mariano Rivera closing the World Series Left-Handed.
