Just a couple hours ago, I had a very nice conversation with one of the young men who plays on our summer teams, and his family asked me to announce his college commitment.

Jake Rodgriguez, of the Elk Grove High School (CA) class of 2010 and EDH Vipers Baseball Club, has just become the youngest player in the history of Oregon State University to commit to play for the Beavers.

Jake joins Andrew Susac and Danny Hayes, both of whom are committed to Oregon State, and Jimmy Bosco, who is committed to the University of California at Berkeley, as EDH Vipers players who've committed to the college of their choice prior to the start of their junior high school season.

Congratulations Jake!

This could be an NCAA violation or maybe just an inaccurate portrayal. In any case, all players should look at a lot of options. Circumstances change (coaches, roster mix, scholly $$, academic acceptance, etc). Committing before the fall of their senior year can lead to heartbreak -- and even then, it's possible.

Until the NLI is signed, only a unilateral verbal commitment (only by the player) is allowed. The danger is that other schools who would otherwise be interested may bypass the kid. Kind of like marrying the first girl you date -- she is going to be a lot different in a few years, so you better take your time and keep your options open.

I do have one question however. I though college coaches couldn't talk to you till July of your Jr. year? What am I missing?

College coaches cannot call a prospect until July 1 after their junior year. However....

* College coaches can call the player's high school or select coach at any time (even the player's freshman year) and ask them to have the player call them
* Players can participate in a college camp at any time and converse freely with the coaches while on campus
* Players and their parents can make unofficial visits to college campuses at any time and visit freely with the coaches

Any of the aforementioned scenarios -- and probably others too -- can lead to a verbal offer by the college and a verbal acceptance by the player way before July 1 following the player's junior year.
