My son had unique circumstances. He was injured during the recruiting season. He was weak during his senior year of high school given he was playing three weeks after shedding the sling from surgery. The shoulder surgery followed five months of crutches and/or a knee brace. He was going to bulk up all summer, hold off starting college and do showcases in the fall and winter to enter college the following year. His hitting instructor, also a former college coach and current pro scout told him he was ready towards the end of August. The instructor made a call to the head coach of a college my son had applied and been accepted. They still gave him the half academic ride they offered the previous spring. My son had to redshirt last year since there weren't any roster openings after a pitcher was chosen from walk on tryouts. But he was warned about the possibility up front.

My son had one coach request that he apply early decision because of the difficulty to get accepted; however, we could not swing it financially. All other schools he applied as early action so we could at least filter out those he didn't get accepted at. (Didn't work since he was accepted at all of them.)

The school he chose to attend had been at the top of his D3 list for quite awhile (he had to go fishing in that D1 pond first). Great academics, high interest from the baseball coach, and great academic scholarship.
