I was up last night watching the Angels beat the Twins (sorry Julie!). The game ended at about 10:15PM, Pacific Standard time. Obviously, if you live on the East Coast, you were up until 1:15AM to watch that game.

A few years ago I went with my son on his 8th grade trip to DC, Philly, and NY. The first night we came back to our hotel around 11PM, I fired up my laptop to check results of the Dodgers game that evening, and ooops, the 4th inning had just started. I would have had to stay up beyond 1AM to follow my team. I've been a Dodger fan since birth. But I have friends that follow the Cubs, Yankees, Redsox, etc...IMO, East Coast fans seem to be much more loyal to their local teams. I used to think it was because California was sort of a melting pot? People from different areas of the country moving here and following their clubs? Now, I also believe it's because we have the opportunity to watch everyone play without having to stay up after 1AM. When I watch Sportscenter before I go to bed, all the games are Final, unless they were delayed by weather or extra innings! When you call it a night on the East Coast, our games are barely half way thru in the west...

Do you think that baseball fans would be more apt to change allegiances if the time frames were flipped? In other words, would you in the eastern and central time zone follow more teams if you had a chance to see more games in the west? By the way, I enjoy watching the Sox, Yanks, Cubs,Phils, even the Rays...but I still bleed Blue!

I'm going to go watch some HS baseball right now! But I was just wondering what your thoughts would be on this subject?

Baseball scores in east coast papers the next morning ...

San Francisco at Los Angles, night
Oakland at Seattle, night

"Do you think that baseball fans would be more apt to change allegiances if the time frames were flipped?"

East coast fans are far more loyal to their teams since being a fan is a cross generation experience. When you grow up going to games with grandpa and dad you're not changing allegiances.

I enjoyed going to Angels games and rooting for them except twelve games a year (seven more in 86). Lynn and Burleson were on the Angles for a while. When I returned to the east after twenty years I still checked the Angels box scores (the day after). But when they won the World Series I didn't feel anything. As the names from my time in California disappeared from the roster I lost interest.
You talking about those 10:35 pm starts on the Super Station bballman? Lol

It was the first time I was able to follow one team for an entire year. Bob Horner , Dale Murphy , Steve Bedrosian , Otis Nixon , on and on and on. Eggs Benedict was one of my favorites. I just enjoyed watching him play. What WTBS did was allow you to follow the guys from start to finish and connect with a team. Here in the Carolinas there is no professional baseball. I remember staying up late many nights watching the Braves.
3rdgen,
That's what I'm referring to, you and I can catch all the games at a decent hour on the MLB package.

CADad,
Japanese fans are baseball crazy, but I guess that's because the other major sports that we have in the states aren't prevalent in their country? They're putting out some pretty darn good ball players though.

RJM,
I went to the "Big A" a handful of times in the late 70's & early 80's as a kid. And when Boston and NY came to town, their fans took over the stadium. It's not as bad now, most Angel crowds are a Sea of Angel Red...but we still have the "Loyal" East Coast Fans that show up for their teams.

bballman,
I remember the Braves playing in the West Division...but I also remember the Reds being in the division too! Every year in the 70's it was the Dodgers or Reds, not a bad divisional rivalry!
