Steve, I live in Lexington about 45 minutes from Richmond, KY. I have a co-worker from there though, so checked with her. Richmond has several new hotels - Jamison, Comfort Suites and a Hampton that are all near EKU. She said two of the top public golf courses would be Gibson Bay and Arlington. Richmond is also close to Berea, KY. There's an Italian restaurant in Berea called Papaleone's (?spelling) which has the best italian I've ever eaten!! It's about 15 minutes from Richmond. Richmond has plenty of restaurants with the usual Applebees, etc. Not much to do if folks are into shopping as far as in Richmond. Berea has some craft shops that are neat to visit, but for any big shopping, you'd need to come to Lexington.
Since my son spent 4 years playing baseball at EKU, I know the town pretty well. We always stayed at the Jameson Inn. Very neat, clean, and reasonably priced. If you like Mexican food, you must eat at Casa Cafe. Haven't found anything on the menu I don't like. Richmond has all the usual college-town restaurants...and a nice WalMart! If you like shopping, go to Lexington and try Hamburg...just north on 75. Any more questions, feel free to ask.
Steve, I'll pass on one more "italian" tip if that's one of your favorite restaurants. There's a good one here in Lexington that is downtown, close to the UK campus. It's a long-standing favorite here. Called Joe Bologna's. It's on Maxwell Street between Upper and Limestone. Parking is in the back behind the restaurant. As long as you're not coming around the time of a UK basketball game, wait shouldn't be too long. If you end up going, let me know and I'll give you exact directions.

Hope you all have a great time in visiting our area!
