2014 RHP has committed to a mid-major D1 in the midwest where he was offered decent athletic money. Recently, he's been suffering from a nagging elbow issue that started as a significant velocity decrease (4-6mph) and progressed to discomfort/mild pain, at which point we shut him down. (In hindsight, I wished we would have shut him down sooner but we thought the velo decrease was just late-season wear down).

He speaks with the college team's recruiting coordinator about every two weeks, mostly about grades, off-season conditioning and such.

An ortho appointment is scheduled. I have a bad feeling about the prognosis. Based on my layman's evaluation of his symptoms, I'm concerned about a UCL injury.

We're obviously not making any decisions until we find out what's going on from the doc. But my question is this: if this turns out to be significant, what should we disclose and when should we disclose it?

My gut tells me that if a non-surgical rehab is pursued, no disclosure is necessary...but we would likely disclose if surgery is necessary.

We want to do the right thing by the program but also don't want to scare them away unnecessarily.

Particularly interested in hearing from those who went through a similar experience.  thank you.

My 2 cents... honesty is the best policy.  For a lot of reasons.

There is a very strong chance that the coaches already know or will find out from somebody very soon.  Do you want them to find out from you or from someone else?

Remember that everybody talks to everybody.  All it takes it your son mentioning elbow issues to a friend, who mentions it to a coach doing lessons who then mentions it to his buddy that happens to be the recruiting coordinator at your sons school.

Lots of good examples of how small this world of recruiting is on this recent thread... http://community.hsbaseballweb...s-watching-a-reprise

You may also consider the thought that the coaches have probably gone through arm issues with players and may be valuable resources with regard to your issues.  Might be able to put him in touch with specialists, trainers, rehab programs, etc.

Good luck.

First off hope you get good news on the diagnosis and all he needs is rest. Based on what we have seen from our team with Pitchers who have already committed, I would be surprised if the school had not already noted his drop in velocity. Having a medical reason is better than one of the other conclusions they could draw. Most important is for him is to get healthy keep us posted and good luck.
