My 16 year old son has been battling elbow pain since September. The orthopedic said it was tendonitis and then an MRI showed a mild bone bruise. He has been through PT for 4 months. He started throwing again 2 weeks ago without pain but when he pitched this past week he had pain again in his elbow. The orthopedic states that he needs to learn to pitch without hyper extending his elbow because that is what is causing the pain. He sees a very good pitching coach that does not see any issue with his mechanics. Any suggestions on how to stop hyper extending his elbow when he releases the ball? Thanks!

newbaseballmom,

Your son suffers from a very easily fixable mechanical problem!
He has been taught how to drive and release his pitches by a traditional pitching coach who believes supinating the forearm (thumb up) during drive and release is OK when it is absolutely not!
Ask him to pronate (thumb down) all his drives and releases, plus lessen his forearm flyout during ball drive and all his problems will disappear.
Tell him that all pitches can be pronated voluntarily.
