I tried to search the forums for a similar situation but could not find an exact answer.

My freshman year at a junior college (njcaa) I got hurt during the season and ended up getting a medical redshirt for the year.

This year, my sophomore season, I will not be able to play because of the injury/surgery I had from the injury that occurred last year.

So does that clock 5 years, to compete in 4 years kick in? Since I never will have played in the first two years. Or does the clock only matter for d1.

Also on a side note, I wanted to possibly transfer to a junior college in california next year, not sure if that would change anything since they are not part not part of the njcaa.

I just want to try and figure out my best options to be able to play and figure out what I need to do academic wise. Thanks for the help!

D1 allows 5 calendar years in which to use 4 seasons of competition. There is a waiver process to allow a 6th calendar year if a player has lost two seasons to hardship. You'll need substantial medical documentation for both years showing that the injury prevents you from playing. It is helpful to have a NJCAA waiver for both years.

NAIA, D2 and D3 all allow 10 full time semesters (15 quarters) in which to use the 4 seasons. D3 and D2 also allow a waiver for 2 years of hardship.

Im not sure but I think that NAIA does not allow any variance to the 10 semester rule.

I think that you could in principle play 2 seasons of JC ball in California.
