What are your thoughts on last night's NL play-in game? I was rooting for the Rockies, but I always have mixed emotions when controversial plays factor into the outcome. Overall though -- a great game to watch, regardless of your side.

Umps -- what are your thoughts on the umpire's decision to delay his call?

PD,

My answer now is different than my answer would have been 5 or 6 years ago.

Back then I would have railed at an official for blowing a call and blame him fo the outcome.

Having seen too many games to remember, I realize they are making split second decisions and are correct a remarkably large percentage of the time. My view now is, The Padres had numerous opportunities to end the game before it came down to a close call and they couldn't get it done. A game is made up of literally hundreds of decisions and plays that decide the outcome. If a team can take care of business, close calls won't matter.

Plus, tychco son#1 is umpiring 9-12 year old games now and I have a new appreciation of the fine work of the BLUE. Wink
It looked to me like he missed home plate. I think the reason Holliday slammed his face in the ground was from the catcher actually stepping on his hand and the catcher's foot was not very close to home plate at that time from what I could tell. Oh well......that's baseball I guess.

It was a super fun game to watch. The Rockies won 13 out of their last 14 games. Don't count them out for a strong run to the WS, they're on a roll......
Forget my previous comment. Just watched it on MLB.

As an umpire, when you have a tag play, especially if any contact is made, the one thing you want to do is make sure the defensive player has control of the ball. Many times you will hear the ump say "Show me the ball." If he doesn't have it, or you see it on the ground, then it's an easy safe call. No need to get wound up about it.

In this play you see the ump on the 3rd base line extended, which is where he should be. It really opens up the view. The catcher drops the ball where the ump can't see it initially. Once he sees the ball on the ground he starts to signal safe in the way an abvious safe call would be made.

His mannerisms tell me that if the catcher holds on to the ball, he's out. Once he sees the ball on the ground, it's an obvious safe call.

That's just my opinion and I am an expert at that.
That's what I think.

I believe that if the catcher comes up with the ball then the call would've been out. Typically if the defense makes the play look good then they get the call (within reason.)

No problem with the timing of the call. It really stinks when you hurry an out call and make a big display of it, only to have the ball laying on the ground. Been there. When you rush the calls that's when bad things happen.
