Bumgarner made me wonder. Top of the 1st, after 8 batters, five runs had scored and there were no outs. If Bumgarner had been pulled at this point, before any outs, what would his ERA have been for the game? (9th batter Pavano struck out, Bumgarner was pulled after the 10th batter doubled.) Thanks

If any of the runs were earned, he would've had the infamous "INF" for his ERA in that game(standing for infinity).

ERA is computed as follows
ERA = Earned Runs Allowed/Innings Pitched x Innings per game

Innings per game is 7 in high school, but 9 in college & pros.

If innings pitched = 0, you have a classic "divide by zero" situation.

When added with other stats for the season it hurts bad when you give up 8 and don't get an out... But assuming a few other appearances, at least you aren't dividing by zero.
