Maybe I'm just behind the times but am I the only one who did not know that most major D1 programs have an Esports team and hire head coaches and assistants to recruit and coach players for these teams. They have practices and require Masters degrees in Sports Management, Coaching, or similar degrees. How did I miss this? There is one coach that makes 6 digits coaching kids to play video games. But we can't find more scholarships for baseball? What is this world coming to?

Research and contact of colleges is part of my current work gig. I occasionally browse the schools' sports sites. There are also schools who pay head coaches and assistant coaches for their fishing teams and bowling teams. Hard to imagine... "so what do you do for a living?" "I'm the assistant fishing coach at Deep Southern Western Arkansas Sate U."
The fact that you can get a scholarship for ESports is maybe the most pathetic thing I've ever heard. I thought it was a joke when I first heard about it. Colleges are spending big money to build ESports "venues"........and all the while, college baseball can't get more than 11.7 scholarships.....lol
I feel the same way but considering that the purpose of having sports programs for many schools is to build enrollment, it makes a lot of sense in that regard.
Moral position aside, there may actually be a current practical application for esports...
But if our kids get smart when they are spending hours playing fortnite or MLB the show they can say they are studying to get a college scholarship. HAHAHA

I didn’t bother to read the article. I’ve read plenty of articles about eSports in the past. A team will live in a house together provided by the team owner and practice video games all day. Arenas the size of NBA/NHL teams fill up for these events. One league has a contract with ESPN.
There been a lot on this in the Boston papers. Robert Kraft (Patriots, Revolution owner) owns a team. Former Celtic Jonas Jerebko owns a team.
If coach potatoes who play video games all day are slackers what do we call coach potatoes who watch video game events?
I first heard about it 2 years ago. A D1 University here was offering either 3 or 5 full time scholarships. I wouldn't be surprised if NCAA is behind the scenes for their benefit (jk/??).
One of Son's friends was offered some scholarship money from a couple of schools. I think one was in San Diego (UCSD?), the other Chicago area...maybe Robert Morris, or something like that.. he is a really smart kid , and a great gamer.
I've told people many times that my son was a good QB early, because he played video games. When the boys were young, he knew plays, positions, etc., and it made him better.
My wife and I never discouraged video games, because we felt he earned good grades, was super busy with 4 different sports, and it kept him at home instead of out and about getting into trouble. If his grades would have slipped, we would have adjusted our thinking, but that didn't happen.
I think video games have a place, but I do worry that the Fort Nite craze has gone too far.
