In my son's game last night, bases loaded, sharp base hit to center.

Runner on third scores easily, and third base coach waves BOTH R2 and R1 to home. R2 is so slow that R1 is about four feet behind him when he finally gets to the plate.

The throw is in time, and our catcher tags both runners out, bang bang!

That has to be the strangest double play I have ever seen.

I recall a double play just like that.

It involved Dale Berra and another Yankee player, Bobby Meacham.

As odd as it sounds, it happens and has happened before that.

To the Sports Editor:

Perhaps Billy Martin would be less wrathful over Bobby Meacham and Dale Berra being tagged out in succession at home plate on Aug. 2 if he realized that this play is merely another Yankee tradition. Fifty-two years ago at the Stadium, Lou Gehrig and the young Dixie Walker were tagged out at the plate on the same play by Luke Sewell, the Washington Senator catcher.

In the bottom of the ninth with no outs and one run already in, Gehrig was on second and Walker on first. Tony Lazzeri hit a long drive to right center. Thinking Goose Goslin, the center fielder, might catch the ball, Gehrig held up near second. Goslin fielded the ball off the wall and Joe Cronin relayed it to the plate. Although he spun around while tagging Gehrig, Sewell recovered in time to block the plate and tag out Walker. Lazzeri ended up at second base. Bill Dickey then ground out to end the game. The Senators won, 6-3.
