Son wore the wrist guards last year and swears by them. He is trying the thumb guard this preseason and comparing it to the Catcher's Thumb product. So far, he likes both. The Evo Shield seems a little less cumbersome but the Catcher's Thumb seems to provide more protection. Let me know if you need more info.
I wore a previous version of the EVO Shield wristbands when I caught. I don't remember what they were called. As a catcher, protecting your body is definitely important and to me each catcher has to make those decisions.

I believe I got mine after blocking a ball in the dirt that left two sets of seams on my forearm... It literally rolled up my arm and covered most of my forearm.

They aren't going to protect you from everything, but they also aren't going to hurt anything. If your son thinks they will help him, then they will.

As an athletic trainer, I do everything in my power to know what is going to help an athlete and what won't. But sometimes things that "shouldn't" work, do. Because the the athlete thinks it does.
Not sure how old your son is, but my soon to be 13 year old son has a pair. Very simple to form fit as "hardening material" is fitted into an insert pocket of the EVO wrist band and allowed to harden to person's wrist shape.

Unfortunately, they did not get used much this past spring and fall seasons... My son did not like to wear when batting, so needed to take them off several several times a game, which was a challenge for a 12-year old as they fit snuggly (plus the material when it hardens is very rigid).

May be different for an older kid with respect to having a little more strength to pull them off easily. I would also buy a couple of sizes to test first and possibly go with a little bigger wrist band, so when the material hardens it does not compress the entire wrist band making it too sung on the wrist. As long as you do not activate the hardening material packet, you can send the whole item back to the store.

Does anyone have any experience with the all star brand wrist guards ? They look like they would do a better job for catchers and you are supposed to be able to rotate them for batting protection. These look to have a soft pad rather than a hard shield inside.

Yup, ours is a bit different then the EvoShield. The main protection is a flexible piece of D30™ which is soft and bendable, but absorbs lots of impact. It actually stiffens when impacted.

We like the soft and flexible nature of it specifically for catchers because they have lots of wrist movement. It moves with the catcher with zero pressure points. Like PolishCannon also said too, when batting, you can rotate the wrist guard to the outside of the wrist for a bit of extra batting protection.

Below is a quick video of me and my brother testing it out with our air cannon. It starts off a little boring, but once the speed increases it gets interesting!

All-Star,

How do you figure the sizing if we don't have access to try on a set locally before buying? The main site just list med,lg,xl. Do you have a fitting guide like wrist/forearm circumference?

Sugi, here is a quick link to the sizing info: http://all-star.posterous.com/...rearm-guard-and-batt

The material does have quite a bit of stretch to it. Most guys down at spring training were requesting size large. If it's for a smaller player, mediums will work perfectly.

That's what my son plays as well. He turns the wrist guard around when catching and playing first to protect his arm from ball bouncing up and catching his anterior forearm. He loves it!!!
Personally I wear the evoshield hourglass thumb guard. It keeps that old catcher thumb design with a little more comfort with the cloth outliner. I think the wristbands are really overrated. I don't like seeing catchers or anyone wear them. I like the old style catchers if you want protection tape it up and call it a day! The position is meant to get beat up a bit. I have caught guys that have been consistent 90's and have had no problem with getting hit in the wrist to bad. Just my opinion, take it or leave it.
