Any help in interpreting the following from those out there who know more than I do would be extremely helpful:

"Mr. X is an extremely competent player who has great understanding for the game. He profiles as a player who can play at the next level in college, but his current size, strength and position may keep him from getting looks from higher profile institutions. It would be interesting to see the improvement in Mr. X's game as he becomes more physically mature because his aptitude and ceiling is very high."

Mr. X is a late-birthday HS junior. On the numeric scales included with the report he scored all 4s and 5s on a 5 point scale except in the "power" category.

As fare as "interpretation" goes, we're interested in both understanding some of the lingo in the report as well as getting an idea as to what level program to target.

Thanks! It's fun to be doing this again four years later!!!
I'm not out of order! You're out of order! The whole freakin' system is out of order! You want the truth? You want the truth?! You can't HANDLE the truth!

I think alot depends on who did the scouting report on this kid. Was it a High school coach, a profesional scout, a showcase guy, or a college summercamp coach?
I found, when my son was a junior and attended summer college camps and showcases, that the evals varied. The showcases tend to exagerate a little on ability and projection. Projections are exactly that, "guess work".
The Five Tool scale(1-5) is what they use in professional baseball. There aren't many 5 tool players in professional baseball. So, while the eval sounds very good, I think it's important to know who was doing the eval and whether they were using a highschool, college or professional rating scale.
It sounds like this player is very talented but his size may keep him from being noticed by the top tier D1 programs. This is OK because there are many D1 programs out there for this player to get a good education and contribute right away as a freshman. As was said before, there are also excellent D2 and D3 programs where this player can play right away.

This eval sound alot like some my son got. He chose a D3 school over 2 D1's because he wanted to play right away. It was a good decision for him because he started at SS as a freshman and he is getting a great education. The scholarship was also better at the D3 than at the D1's. It's academic and guaranteed for 4 years as long as he keeps his grades up.

If I were this player's father I would advise my son to look at all options(D1-D3) and NAIA and would tell him to pick the school where he would be getting the best education taking into consideration where they want him the most.

Thanks to everyone. The eval is from former major league coach/current camp coach. Player is a middle infielder, mostly second base. The size issue is clear. We'll have to see what happens over the next year. Good news is that at this time last year he was about 5'3" and now he is approaching 5'8".

Brod, he does want to be a coach someday!

TR--you qualify.
