On a fly ball down the line or in catches in foul territory I'd like for someone to explain the proper mumps ring mechanics of making this call. Second, on diving catches in foul territory, also comment on the proper technic and mechanics of making this call.

Whilw I'm interested in the proper mechanics, I know there is the baseball umpires manual. Here lies my thoughts, on a diving catch in foul territory you move up the line to get the best possible angle, pause in position, and sign and yell "catch" then signal the catch was in foul territory but only signal foul and not verbalize it. If the diving catch is dropped/not caught you signal and yell at same "foul". Please give me your thought please.

When the ball is first touched, its potential status of fair or foul is determined. At that point, you should signal, by pointing and no verbal, which one. Then when catch/no catch is determined, you signal and give a verbal statement. If it is not caught, then you will either emphatically point fair or foul, and give an emphatic verbal call if foul.

Matt thank you very much for your reply. I just got off the phone with my professional contact and he pretty much said the same thing you did. He added that it is extremely import that you signal first as soon as you see the ball first and before you have a catch. While this can be in split seconds to do this my contact told me the thought behind this is by signaling in the "present tense" just before the catch/no catch you are tell observers you got the ball in foul territory. Then by calling the catch second you have now a catch no catch in foul territory. I spoke to the level  of mechanical importance to him. He said while he agreed the catch is most important the mechanic helps an umpire and observers know once the ball is touched but not catch it was in foul territory.

The diving catch cinnerio I asked him of he did concede that due to the timing of this play of a diving catch an umpire trying to signal foul ahead of the diving catch is almost impossible. On diving catches he does see a vast majority of umpires calling catch first. But he did say to be consistent with the mechanic that by doing the signal first then catch you are being consistent with the mechanic and by calling a diving catch and signaling after the fact it is not wrong to do so. Actual mechanics are regardless of timing to signal first (leaning heavy on trying to call it once determined and before the catch no catch) fair or foul and then the catch.
