Homerun04 is correct, Fallbrook did have a stronger team last year. With the graduation of their ’06 class, the Warriors had only 2 returning starters on their ’07 squad. With a team of underclassmen this year, and a year of varsity experience under their belts, things are looking good for next year.

Fallbrook is considered one of the top high school baseball programs in San Diego County, if not the State of California. They also have incredible fan support from the entire Fallbrook community. Head Coach Matt Parker is a well respected baseball coach and teacher of the game, who has sent many of his Warriors to major DI programs. To push it one step further, several players are currently playing professional baseball with one in the MLB pitching for the Washington Nationals. Three of his players from his ‘06 team played in this year’s NCAA Division I Baseball Championship Tournament.

The school has one of the most beautiful baseball fields in the county. It also has one of the smallest (310 down the line, maybe 330 to center); truly a hitter’s park. To offset the “big fly”, a 20-foot high fence runs along the outfield. The playing surface and the seating are top notch. Their batting cage facility is first-class. The baseball field is named after Brooklyn Dodger great and local Fallbrook resident, Duke Snider. The field is also the site for the annual “Duke Snider Home Run Derby” which features some of the top high school talent in Southern California.

However, the baseball program will be undergoing a major change next season. After 6 years as head coach, Matt Parker is leaving Fallbrook to pursue other interests. No news as to his successor, but I cannot imagine Coach Parker letting the baseball program fall into the hands of someone on the outside. I would guess it will be one of his assistant coaches who will take over the team for a smooth, seamless transition, but whoever it is, they have awfully big shoes to fill. I am sorry to see Matt Parker leave Fallbrook High School, he has truly been a great asset for the entire San Diego County High School Baseball community. I sincerely wish him all the best in his new endeavors.

Dear Fallbrook High School Baseball Community,

I have some very sad news to pass on to you and very little information at this time.

Coach Parker has been in Arizona with his summer team playing in a tournament this last week. His wife Kari and daughter got a head start towards home and on their journey they were in a fatal accident. Neither one survived. I have not talked with Coach Parker and am not trying to get in touch with home at this time. He is in Parker, Arizona with his family as well as Kari's. As information comes my way I will pass it on to you, but I am going on vacation tomorrow and will be out of town until next Friday. If information of a service comes my way I will ask someone to pass it on to all of you.

Please Keep Coach Parker in your prayers.
Found this from the San Diego U-T. My prayers and deepest condolences go out to the Parker family, and to Kari's family.

FALLBROOK – The wife and toddler daughter of former Fallbrook High School baseball coach Matt Parker were killed yesterday in a freeway crash outside Quartzsite, Ariz., district officials said.

Parker and his family were in Peoria, Ariz., for a baseball tournament this week, but his wife decided to leave a day early, said Chris Murphy, whose son was playing on Parker's team in the tournament.
Kari Parker of Murrieta and her daughter, Keira, who was nearly 2, were on Interstate 10 apparently headed to Lake Havasu, where her parents live, or to Needles, where her husband's parents live, when the crash occurred, Murphy said.

He said Kari Parker's mother, who was visiting a friend in nearby Surprise, was apparently on her way home when she came upon the wreckage and recognized the car.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said Kari Parker and Keira were declared dead at the scene of the 10:44 a.m. single-car crash. A department spokeswoman said it wasn't clear why Parker veered back and forth across the highway before her vehicle rolled several times. The spokeswoman said the toddler was ejected.

Coach and friend Brian Cain expressed sympathy for the Parker family.

“She was the cutest little thing,” Cain said about Parker's daughter. “He really adored her. (He) used to be 100 percent baseball but since she came along . . . well, he just adored her.”

Parker's team, which includes at least two Fallbrook High School players, lost its game in the West Coast Division of the USA Junior Olympic Baseball Championships on yesterday morning. The team was eliminated from championship contention but was to play a consolation game today, said Jim Murphy, whose son, Clark, plays on the high school team.

Parker recently took a leave of absence from the district to become the principal of an elementary school in Needles, his hometown, said Tom Anthony, superintendent at Fallbrook Union High School District.

Anthony said Parker had the option to return to Fallbrook after one year.

Parker has coached for about nine years, taking his team to the playoffs, and is well-known and respected in the community.

“After I heard, I called my wife and told her I loved her and I'll hug my kids when I get home,” Cain said. “I feel so bad for him. He lost his life; they were everything to him.”

Staff writers Linda Lou and Kevin Gemmell contributed to this report.
Condolences to Coach Parker on his tragic loss. Hard to imagine how anyone ever recovers from something like this tragedy. We met Coach Parker last summer, playing @ Fallbrook hs in a PG tourney. It was apparent how much pride he took in his field and what a devoted coach he was. He sat through long hot games all day, kept the field perfect between games and was a wonderful host. Our prayers go out to him and his family.
