I was talking to a scout the other day and I commented how I was amazed at some of the velocities I see at MLB games. His reply surprised me a bit. He said that you will find many teams use what he called “fan guns” at their stadiums to report velocities. These guns give favorable readings and are used for ball park scoreboards and TV telecast.

He went on to say that fans don’t necessarily get excited about a pitcher that is throwing 88 to 89 however if they see him with a 90+ fastball it is more marketable. While most of the pitchers have 90+ type of velocity available to them, they have found they were much more affective giving up a couple MPH to gain more movement or control.

Anyone else heard about these so called “fan guns”. If so can you tell me where to get one, my kid is looking for a few more MPH’s.
