I played catch with my son this afternoon. It really shouldn't be that big of a deal, heck, we've played catch numerous times over the years. However, today was different, it was the first time that I've tossed the ball with him since this past June prior to him leaving to play summer ball in the northwest. We were limited to thirty tosses from 45 feet and he had to maintain a bit of an arc. I felt like I was playing with my five year old son again that just so happened to catch better than he did fourteen years ago.

My son had UCL Reconstruction (Tommy John) Surgery at the end of July. His physician just recently released him to begin his throwing progam and he has a ton of work to do. I tell you what, it's been a difficult beginning to his collegiate career. He was hurt for the majority of his frosh year, and ultimately was redshirted. And now he will miss the entire 2013 college baseball season.

As we were tossing the baseball back & forth, I realized that my kid is going to handle this adversity just fine and will likely come back much stronger than before from a mental and physical standpoint. My job as a parent is to support him. I'll still be at the majority of the games, and I will be a big fan of the player that's handling the radar gun duties this season.

Yep, today's simple father/son catch took me back to the beginning...it was pretty cool.

bsbl247,
I know exactly what you mean. My 2015 son and I started this same process about 3 weeks ago. We are reaching the end of Phase I. The only difference is that my son didn't require TJ surgery, at least not at this point. It is a pretty surreal experience when you are used to your son zip the ball much faster than you can even handle to be back where it all started.
Good luck to your son in his recovery!
Swampboy,

Thank you, and yes, I'm very proud of him.

younggun,

Best wishes to your son as well. I'm happy to hear that surgery wasn't required for him. I agree, playing catch in "phase 1" takes you back a little, that's for sure.

JB,

Thanks buddy...and who knows, there's always a possibility. It's not like our last name is common Wink. BTW, congrats to your eldest son for being added to the Nationals 40 man roster. I started following him on Twitter last week, I know he's excited.
twotex,
I hear ya, and there's no doubt in my mind that he's up for the challenge. Thanks.....

birdman14,
Thanks buddy, you know I'll be following your son.

Blue10,
That's awesome, send me a PM and let me know who your son's buddy is...and best of luck to your boy at Stanford.

As for my original post, it wasn't meant to be about my son's injury. It was more about reminiscing about playing catch with my son when he was younger and realizing how fortunate he is to still have an opportunity to play this game as we Lobbed the ball back & forth to one another...and for me, how fortunate I am to be able to watch him play.
bsbl247,
I doubt you could appreciate how poignant your post is for me and with our son.
The ability to "play catch" with our son ended with a salvage surgery, but boy did he fill up the baseball experiences before that.
Now, our son is already providing me glimpses of that time when our new grandson, our son, "and Grandpa" will be playing catch.
While "catch" is somewhat in a generation gap for us now, I love the vivid feelings your posts created. Thank you!

I love playing catch with my son.

Unfortunately he doesn't enjoy it as much anymore. My shoulder has gotten so bat that throwing 60 feet is getting to be a chore. I think he feels guilty about me wincing through the motion, plus tossing the ball to the old man involves me trying to catch a 75mph 'toss' while winging my massive 45mph return throws to him.
Stripping it down to it's essence; playing catch is therapy. Emotional and physical. Caring and sharing.

I played catch with my two year old granddaughter yesterday. True it was only an orange plastic ball and it was in the living room. But I got a kick out of her coming as close as she could to me and throwing the ball as hard as she could right at my head. She would laugh and back up and hold her arms out and I would lob it right in where she could cradle it with both arms. Then repeat.

I still play catch with my father. He's been gone for many years now.
Went through something similar with my 2010. Knee injury Sr. year of HS, rehab, re-injury, surgery to repair, redshirt frosh year in a CC, then completed one year in JC, Scholly to a high level DII, and he's finishing up fall ball there in prep for his first spring of DII ball. They come back and play harder and know what it takes to get there!

Hang in there bsbl247.....the ride will continue and great things are coming!

This thread has been a great read. I haven't had anything to add (and really still don't) other than thank you to all of you as you've made me realize I should treasure every minute of that the father-son catch I am STILL able to enjoy! Sometimes we take too much for granted until it's gone (and yes, I can see the day when it is gone - he throws pretty hard, and my eyes are getting worse and worse...).

Thank you all.

20dad,
I am not sure that any poster in the more than 10 years I have been on this site can say more in such few words. What you say and how you say it is a beautiful gift. If I had never been a member of the HSBBW, it would have been my loss. Your words and thoughts, and the context in which you share them...just the BEST!
Thank you for letting me share your gift.
