I have the NBA game on while I'm reading the paper. As a promotion by one of their sponsors, Kobe Bryant was asked his five favorite players while growing up. Let's turn this into baseball. Who were your favorite five baseball players growing up. Let's call growing up through age fifteen. Mine were:

Carl Yastrzemski
Tony Conigliaro
Pete Rose
Willie Mays
Bob Gibson

Players I saw a lot of...

-Mike Matheny
-Albert Pujols

These are players that were major favorites, but I didn't get to actually see too much of...
-Roberto Clemente---> read many books about him and have always idolized him for what he did on and off the field
-Ozzie Smith--->The Wizard; he retired when I was about 7 I guess
And I'm gonna cheat a little bit on this last one.. I don't know when he joined MLB, but I love watching David Eckstein play too!

Good night Pumpsie Green, wherever you are! - Eddie Andelman

For those who don't know Eddie Andelman was the father of sports talk radio before there were sports talk radio stations. He had a show on Boston radio Sunday nights back in the late 60's. His show ended with "Good night Pumpsie Green, wherever you are!" Pumpsie Green was the first black Red Sox. His brother is Cornell Green from the Cowboys.
Roberto Clemente
Reggie Jackson
Willie Stargell
Robin Yount
Omar Visquel

Breaking the rules here

Johnny Bench
Manny Ramirez

Anybody else notice a common theme here? Roberto Clemente. He was discovered by Branch Rickey who some believe was one of the greatest judges of talent of all time.

How about four 20 game winners on the same pitching staff in the same year?

Pat Dobson
Mike Cuellar
Dave McNally
Jim Palmer

How about 10 rings with Yogi Berra.

How about Babe Ruth the greatest player of all time.

How about Lou Gehrig who was as good as or better than Ruth.

How about Ted Williams and Joe Dimaggio. How about Ducky Wucky Medwick. Baseball is the greatest of all games.

One of my favorite baseball quotes by Reggie, "Fans don't boo nobodies."

How true, how true, how true! Wink

That is a great line justbb! Many people say that Reggie was just too arrogant for their tastes. He never came across that way to me and I have always liked him.
When I posted my fav-5 I was going to include Nap Lajoie, but I didn't know who he was when I was 15 years old or younger.

I did know who Lou was because had I'd watched Pride of the Yankess several time before I was 8 years old. I knew who Mick was and and Stan the Man too. There were more than a few times when I'd stay up and listen past my bedtime to Nolan Ryan "K" more than 10. I also loved watching Don Drysdale pitch and later when he'd call Angel games with Dick Enberg my favorite Angels Broadcast duo.

I barely knew there were any other teams besides the Twins before age 15, and my list reflects that (one non-Twin). Big Grin

Tony Oliva
Harmon Killebrew
Rod Carew
Bert Blyleven
Hammerin' Hank

If the age range didn't stop me at the mid-70's, my list for all-time favorites would be all Twins! Big Grin

Tony Oliva
Kirby Puckett
Joe Mauer
Jack Morris
Joe Nathan

My 5

Jim Rice
Fred Lynn
Butch Hobson
Carlton fisk
Willie Stargell

Obviously I was a big Sox fan...still am actually!

For some reason I was also a Pittsburgh Pirate fan...I think it was becuase the first world Series that I really followed closely was 1979 and the "We are family" Pirates. Plus as a kid I read a lot of books on baseball and my favorite was Roberto Clemente.

I have to post cards of HOF placques...both are due to my reading their stories as a kid..

Roberto Clemente

Nap Lajoie

My two all time great non-Red sox players!
