A high school kid from Arkansas spent the entire summer one year living with us and working on baseball. He ended up getting drafted by the White Sox. He worked very hard and became a mid 90s pitcher. He was named the White Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Year. One of the nicest and "biggest" kids I ever met.

I'm watching him play left tackle for Texas Tech tonight. Rylan Reed is 6'7"/314 and he held 1st round pick Chris Long (UVA) to 3 tackles and no sacks in last year's Gator Bowl. Chris is the older brother of Kyle Long (the second biggest baseball player we've ever had) and hall of famer Howie Long's son.

Rylan should be a good NFL draft pick this year. Wonder if anyone has played professional baseball and then became an offensive lineman in the NFL?

Texas Tech is up 22-3 on Texas in the battle of unbeatens. I'm pulling for the Raiders! Smile In spite of the fact that another player who spent a season in our hometown playing baseball in the Angels organization, Quan Cosby, is a star for U of Texas.

I don't know if my younger son was able to get in or not. The stadium is relatively small.

Matty had to go to a wedding tonight.

I was texting his cell phone play by play until his mother told me that he had forgotten his phone about midway through the 2nd quarter.

So, I'm texting him the play by play to his GF's phone.

OK, here we go........................
He suffered arm problems and battled control problems and decided to get his college education.

TPM, There have been several two sport professionals, but I don't recall any who were interior linemen in football. But speaking of Stanford, another player we were very close to is Darin Naatjes who played tight end at Stanford and then was drafted and signed by the Phillies in baseball. Believe it or not Darin was listed at 6-9/240, yet another very "big" athlete.
No one ever watches offensive linemen, but I watched Rylan on every play in this game. #74 left tackle!

He played a perfect game. Gave up no sacks, the guy he was responsible for only made one tackle and that was at the end of a nine yard run. He had no penalties and made several key blocks. Absolutely man handled the Texas all american defensive end. In fact, that D end left the game with an injury in the 2nd half.

First time I ever isolated on an offensive line man. Don't remember his name being mentioned once. But I'm sure someone knows about his performance tonight.
Actually, I did hear the commentators mention that he had played professional baseball before returning to school...I didn't catch all the details but did notice that they gave a little information on his baseball background.

My dog is still shaking from the high energy voices screaming at the TV tonight....unfortunately our household ended up on the losing end tonight. Frown

PG, ESPN did a profile on him and the other O linemen earlier in the day. Impressive performance by the Red Raiders. We have always loved the offensive firepower of Tech. This year they can run and play D. Very good team.

BTW, I used to break down film. There is nothing like focusing on a dominating O-lineman. It is a beautiful thing to watch. Also, the D-end he went up against will probably be a first rounder. jmo
