Well, I've never been paid, so I may not count with your particular question. I've coached travel team when my son was a freshman & sophomore, and the local D1's Fall League when he was a senior. (So I have coached on a D1 field, how 'bout that?!)

Early in my AAU career, I went out on the field to coach first and Home Blue approached me somewhat gruffly, wanting to know what I was doing on the field as he'd "never seen a lady out here". This was surprising, as I knew him from keeping the book for years and because he's black. I said, "Lighten up, honey, not so many years ago you wouldn't have been welcome out here either". We had a good laugh, and I never had another (serious Wink) question about it.
Sorry to Intrude ladies....
But here is my experience...a while back, I umpired a league of small mill towns stretched out across a river valley...each town had 1 or 2 teams..

The one team I remember he most was from a economically depressed town and the team was a rag tag mix of wildly differing abilities....one day they played like champs and the next they were the bad news bears...

They had a coach...a small fiery black lady who knew nothing about baseball........nothing, 0, nada........had no clue...about the game....but she knew children...and she loved them......and she demanded respect and received it.... She lost games but won the hearts and devotion of all the players who played for her.....

I know she went on to coach basketball, and midget football.....and she never let lack of experience or rules knowledge get in the way of her service to the children of her community.....

She made her boys into men........If I am comparing coaches.........Id take one of her any day......
