First off, it is in the middle of nowhere, Iowa (acutally it is small town called Dyersville which is west of Dubuque).

You drive on country roads through cornfields and then there it is. The white farm house is actually pretty small, but you can not go in. The family that owns the house owns half the field (basically draw a line from behind 3rd base to the RF fence...but there is no fence). A corporation bought the other half from the family that owns the neighboring farm. Each owner has a store with shirts and all kinds of memorabilia (corporate on the 3rd base side, family on the 1st base side). The corporation turns a profit with their sales and the folks that own the farm house put their sales back into the field.

Anyway, I get out and go up to the field and it was awesome! Me and my oldest daughter "had a game of catch." There were some other guys out there and they were playing catch. I had a bat so they asked if they could use it. I said sure, but only after you guys throw me BP first! So that is what we did, we all took BP and shagged fly balls and ground balls on the field. The OF is deep, but I managed to hit a few in the cornfield. Of course I had a wood bat! If I had brought an aluminum bat out there Shoeless Joe would have popped out of the corn (no pun intended) and would have kicked my butt. Of course, I bet he would have wanted to swing the aluminum bat and I bet he would have liked how much pop it had.

Of course, I had to walk off into the cornfield and wave bye to the family. Older daughter knew what I was doing, but the baby cried! Now when we watch the movie, the little one always tells everyone, "my daddy played baseball there! He walked in the corn!"

If you love baseball the way I do, then I suggest you visit Dyersville, Iowa someday while the field is still there. Something else interesting. I don't remember if it's the last Sunday or the first Sunday of the month, but they have a "ghost game." The locals that were the movie extras put on the old style baseball uniforms and play an exibition game. They draw a big crowd, but remember, there is not much seating...just the one set of bleachers that "Ray" built!

You do have a way with words FD, a trip to Iowa sounds great right now..............thanks for sharing...

While reading your story I found my mind drifting back to our trip to Cooperstown.....son was 12 and our team was playing in the Cooperstown Dreamspark Tournament. Our entire team went and the families all stayed together in a resort that was nothing more than individual cabins set amongst the wheat fields. A major geographical and weather change for an AZ/TX girl......

Our Cooperstown home came complete with a countryfide fishing hole, and I just now realized a Petticoat would have been quite appropiate for that trip Big Grin It was a wonderful little place.....

Each night after a wonderful day of youth baseball, that we were able to attend in shorts and sweatshirts the families would head back to our little country retreat, stoke up the fire pit, grill out and watch the fireflys dance in the night. Each night I would be in awe over these marvels of summer (never had fireflys in AZ).

The fog would roll in over the wheat fields while the younger siblings played a game of pick up ball amongst the fields.

That summer that place became my "Field of Dreams" and I will forget it as it was one of the best summer baseball trips and family vacations ever.

Only downside to this trip was waking up each morning to a lovely view of beer cans and picnic tables....the leftovers from a great evening of bar-b-ques and fun Big Grin ohhhhh the joys of baseball and a team that was more like a family than most.......

If you have an opportunity, go! It is fun!!
We played AAU Jr. Olympics in Des Moines a couple years ago...Stayed an extra day to take son & another friend...
Several families were visiting the FoD...little guys & gals about 4-5-6...
We just started a "pick-up" game...
moved the pitcher about halfway to home plate, sent runners on the balls we "couldn't find", everyone got on base... lots of "hits"..
I was umpire...none of the "big kids" or dads could get a hit!
Bottom line, we had so much fun "horsing around", and playing till sunset!
Got some fun pics, too...Corn stalks about 10 ft high!

Last summer my significant other and made two trips. First, we flew to New York and stayed in Grenwich Village. I took my oldest daughter and she took her son. We took them to a Yankee game. Got there via the subway...the only way to go in my opinion. Yankee Stadium is like a Cathedral, very sacred ground to me. The kids loved it, especially the history.

Then just the two of us drove to Boston. On the way, we went to Cooperstown and the Hall of Fame...it was great. Saw the Red Sox and Blue Jays at Fenway Park. What a party outside that place, they still had a world series hangover. On the way back, we caught a game at Jacobs Field in Cleveland. That is a great ball park!!! This summer we are going to Wrigley, I've been, she hasn't...she is in for quite the experience.

When I was a kid, we went to Cooperstown and toured the hall -- it was like magic. We stopped by Williamsport on the way home --- what a trip.

I grew up in Ohio when the tribe played at the mistake on the lake ---- was back there a few years ago and took my oldest to the Jake -- we snuck in and went down on the field, to the locker rooms, hung out in the dugout for a while -- acted like kids (I guess he was one) -- more fond memories.

3-4 of the '03 Panthers have planned a trip to Yankee Stadium, Cooperstown, and Fenway ---- I don't suppose they'd take me along as the designated driver? Smile
