Tell me if this is logical thinking on the subject of recruiting:

D1 - powerhouse programs have their verbals in by now and the roster will be complete after the early signing period.

Smaller D1 programs have made a lot of offers and have verbal commitments but they may still have an opening for the right player in the Spring.

D2 and D3 - waiting to see who is still available after the signing period then they go after recruits.

Qustion - For players who don't sign this fall - is the chance of D1 very remote and should they concentrate more on D2/D3/ and JUCO? I don't know the answer and I am sure there are exceptions to every "rule". What do you think?

Redhead,
I think your way of thinking is indicative of the way many of the players and their families look at college recruitment. Recruiting is not as “level sensitive” or as dependent on what the level above them has done. Players are recruited all the time and are signed all the way up into the spring. No one waits on the other. Yes, there are players that are juggled around at the D-1’s and end up at a D-2 or JUCO and some players are on the fence of whether to go pro or college and these do impact recruiting to a certain degree but that is not what controls the bulk of recruiting. When the “recruiting bell” rings, all colleges start recruiting. Colleges target players they think they can sign and many will use their proven network of coaches, scouts, and contacts to fulfill their roster needs. Many colleges try to recruit within a geographic area while it appears others avoid certain geographic areas. Everyone is grabbing and offering during this time no matter what their level. My first advice is for the parent to showcase their son for the much needed exposure and to get him evaluated so you can have an idea at what level he can compete. It would be bad to wait for the big D-1 to call and the phone never ring ---- but if you do you homework you should know (or at least have a very good idea) if this call is going to happen prior to getting into the middle of the recruiting cycle. We all start into the recruiting ride not knowing what is going to happen and ONLY after you son has signed and maybe even played a year or two of college can you really be sure you knew what was going on during recruitment. BE PROACTIVE!

red, you have gotten some good feedback, however your question stirred my memory and by some stroke of luck I found what I was looking for

your logic is not only reasonable, but seems pretty much on target

excerpts from Perfect Game's article

"Many of the veterans (with much recruiting experience) talk about the best time for a young player to seek showcase and high level national exposure. Most of those who have been through this situation would say the most important time to get exposure is the summer after a player's high school junior year.

Just a couple years ago we would have agreed completely with that thinking. However, we have and are seeing some major changes take place. Talented high school players are committing earlier every year.

Only a few years ago the early signing period at top 40-50 type programs would see some early (fall) NLI's and some late spring and even summer) heavy recruiting going on. While this is still true at many DI colleges and smaller colleges, it's happening less and less at the top level programs."

Many low to mid level DI colleges do actually wait until after the early signing period to do the bulk of their recruiting. They recruit the best of what is left after the power programs have filled their quota.

That would tend to make my information incorrect. Sorry. This would mean those quality players that wants to secure a spot on a D-1 roster needs to showcase at least a year earlier than previously thought. But since the big D-1s only comprise a small portion of college players this information does not apply to everyone. We just need to determine who wants to play D-1 ball and who should showcase earlier. Wink

A couple of semi-random points...

- Good post by TR.

- Been here before (Just now with TR) but it bears repeating...Rather than waiting around for the dream offer that may never come to drop into your lap (early or late)...Be proactive. Do your baseball skills analysis, your self search, your school and program research, identify, and contact directly.

- Beyond that...to answer your question....The most amazing things happen...life goes on. Even in the spring and summer programs sometimes lose players to transfers, academics, draft, injuries,... While I certainly would not count on such things, and would get applied to a number of schools...the baseball placement process continues until classes start...It aint over until it's over.
