I am a senior this year, and have ambitions to keep playing baseball. I have not recieved much college antention, that is due to a bad offensive year last year, as i split time catching. This spring has started well and I feel good about it.

Do most DII, NAIA, JUCO, and small DI's wait until after spring to offer scholarships, so they can see what the kids do senoir year?

Also how many freshman recieve athletic scholarship money at DII's?
And how many freshman walk on at DII and small DI schools?

The real world:

At this point in time , you are a HS senior, if you are getting interest you have a load of work to do to make it happen--- you need to get seen especially if you are doing well this spring

Yes there is scholarship money around in the spring and more than most think.

But you need to create a buzz regarding your ability---

How are your grades?
Have you applied to and been admitted to any colleges as of this posting?

Hi There Rock-
I do some recruiting for DII Saint Michael's College in Vermont and I think I can help answer some of your questions. In terms of scholarship money at the DII level...it differs greatly from institution to institution. Generally many sports at the DII level are "non-revenue" producing sports...so oftentimes (in the Northeast for example) schools will put their scholarship money towards their basketball teams etc etc (which is the case @ our school...10 full rides for men/women in basketball). That said...there are many great DII programs who do offer scholarship money...and of course countless programs that will work w/ you to try and get you the best financial aid possible. We always stress one thing: academics! If you do well in the classroom...it gives you a lot more leverage when going for financial aid (the better your GPA, SAT scores etc)...if you can't get into the school academically and succeed once there...you don't do much good to any Coach who is trying to bring you into his program.

Depending on how you'd classify a walk-on I'd say it occurs fairly regularly at the D II level...and sometimes at the D I level as well (but oftentimes players who dream of playing in college would rather have more assurance that they have a good shot at playing and having a career rather than risking everything to attempt to play DI not under scholarship or w/ any guarantees from a Coach). We generally will always have an idea about the guys we are bringing in before they get here...we like to meet with them...and thoroughly recruit them so that they have the comfort of knowing everything about our institution/program before they get decide on coming. It is vitally important for us that a potential student-athlete love the school for everything it has to offer...b/c in the event of an injury baseball could be there one day and gone the next (and we seek to provide kids with a COMPLETE collegiate experience both ON and OFF the field)....Please feel free to contact me personally w/ any other questions or concerns. Our Head Coach (Seth Cole) will be hopping on the boards here from time to time to attempt to help out and hopefully lure some prospects up to our school....if you have any interest in coming to the Northeast to play some college ball...we'd love to show you what we have to offer (see my other posts yesterday in the 'ask about colleges' section). Kind regards. BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!!!! - Matt Byrne
