We had a runner that was in a close play at first, he thought that he was called out and started to go back to the 3rd base dugout in foul territory. He never touched the base, and was not attempting to advance to second he was about 1/3 of the way down the line and the defensive team threw the ball to first base and tagged him. The umpire called him out. My thought was that he never touched the base after the initial play. Should he have been called out or not?

There is a rule about abandoning the base that the umpire may have been using.

Teach the young player to stay on the base until he knows what the call is.
And the first base coach needs to remember his job as well.
