My son (2011) is going to his first showcase the 7th and 8th of November. He is attending the PG national underclass showcase. He is going to do the outfield and infield parts as well as the pitching portion. What does each part consist of and how are they graded.

Thanks so much for your comments.

My son also just did his first PG showcase in September. I really can't address the detail of how they come up with their rating, but I can address how the showcase went and a suggestion or two.

Infield and outfield - infielders will take 5 ground balls from short and throw to 1st. Outfielders will take a number of flyballs and throw to 3rd and home. Velocities are recorded on all throws. My suggestion is to make at least one throw at max effort to get the highest possible velocity. Peak velocity is the one that goes on the profile - regardless of whether the throw winds up anywhere close to the target. Make your other throws good ones because evaluators will judge your overall performance.

Hitting will be mostly evaluated during a BP session where you will get about 10 swings. Comments on game situation hitting will be mentioned if you hit well during the games, but the main evaluation of your swing will come from the BP session.

Pitching will be 100% evaluated during 2 games that are played. Here again, make at least a couple throws that are max effort. Maximum velocities are posted. However, a pitchers mechanics, effectiveness and control are also evaluated, so throw strikes, move the ball around and use all of your pitches (fastball, curve, slider, changeup, etc. - whatever you have).

You will also have to run a 60 yard dash, so if you can practice some sprints prior to the event, that may help out as well.

Hope this was helpful. Good luck to your son.

Good advice!

Work on your starts on the 60! Start low, stay low through the initial burst, and for God sakes run all of the way through the finish at full speed!

It is amazing how many kids I see that let up at the finish!
To PG Staff (also sent you a PM)

My son who is 2012 grad just had his 1st Perfect Game showcase participating in the Underclass session 1 in Mesa, AZ recently. He did reasonably well participated in 60 yd/OF/IF/BP skills on 1st day and pitched on 2nd day in that particular order. He started 3b on those 2 10 inning games and played OF and pitched the last 2 innings of 2nd game on last day.He actualy had one of best OF velocities at 82 mph, IF was 79 mph, pitching velo 77 mph. My question is does PG staff take arm fatigue into consideration in the rating of a player? What are your experience with this type of decreasing velocity in a showcase environment? Since this was his first showcase, he just wanted to show all his skills and hopefully PG staff can help guide us on what position would be his strongest suit in the future. Since he also had some sort of a record playing in PG National underclass in Tucson hope this would help in his evaluation as well. Thanks for the opportunity to participate in your event and your input in his evaluation. Hope we can do it again next time.

Misu23, How did your son do? Hope he enjoyed the experience. My son definitely did.

I don't know how they do pitching. Just make sure you look like a ballplayer. Tuck in your shirt. Wear babseball pants, not shorts. Put your hat on the right way. Quit fiddling at your equipment bag between every station. Tie your shoes before you go out there. Don't spit all over the place. Show some hustle. And don't look at your dad all the time.

The rest will take care of itself.
He actually did really well considering the poor boy was soooo very nervous. It was his first showcase and he thought everyone was going to play like A-rod. He soon realized that most of the kids were no better than he was. It was a good experience for him to get this first one under his belt! He had the best OF velocity and he pitched well although both of his velicities from the mound and the out field were not his best, mostly I believe was because of his nerviousness. but like I said it was his first and I hope he learned a lot from the experience!
I had my son do a showcase as a freshman just to help him feel what it was like to pitch in front a bunch of coaches standing about 15 feet behind the plate behind a screen pointing radar guns at him.

I know the coaches were not really there to look at freshman, but he did not know that.

Gave him some experience to draw from once he did get a chance a year later when it did make a difference.
