Saw where Melendez is new coach and PG has them with the #1 recruiting class for 2017 - albeit with 29 recruits. 2016 looked as though there were 13 recruits and last year's team had 5 freshman. They did seem to have a rather large Junior class of 21 (seniors this year) with most of those being transfers in and not recruited as freshmen.
Can anyone explain how a program operates with those huge recruiting numbers? No idea what the 2017 roster will look like, but I assume there has already been some cuts and can only imagine what is going to occur next year. Has anyone seen a program with larger recruiting numbers and possibly more cuts? Realize several may not set foot on campus, but these numbers are simply unfathomable. I have no interest in the program and am only bringing this up as a possible case study for coaching turnover.
I also saw with their 2016 roster there were approx. 19 players transferred into the program.
I saw an article on their website promoting a second walk on tryout date this fall - did they really need a few more bodies?. What I did not see is any articles on NLI signings, but that seems to be the norm for the program.
Maybe they are starting a JV program??? LOL
THAT is a large incoming class. I would have to look at that hard if that wa a school my 2018 was considering. Seems like big numbers. Lots of transfers in and out.
Not only a big class, but a very talented one depending on the MLB draft.
.. and Butch Davis named new football coach. Looks like they are trying to take the next step with their sports program as a whole. I was also a bit surprised when I saw their school enrollment numbers. On the other side of the coin, they only have five men's sports.

Last year New Mexico State brought in 35 recruits/transfers. There was a coaching change that cleaned house, but even the 35 guys in that class were in direct competition the moment they stepped on campus. I assume some didnt make it past fall ball. I havent analyzed what has transpired since. I did notice that they had their best season in a long time though. There was no reason for NMSU to be bad with so many great ball players in the west and southwest looking for a place to play ball

Plus they are about to spend a little money on the baseball facilities.
I think it's a good hire for FIU. He's got some of my son's friends and former teammates coming in, so I hope they do well as a program.
Recruiting wise, they do appear to have a lot of players coming in. I think the fact that the tuition is low for state residents may attract some area players who aren't getting $$ love from UM/FSU/UF/UCF .
Coach Menendez has won wherever he's been so I wouldn't expect this to be any different.

I think the WAC has become the most bizarre conference in college sports. Not a single remaining school from the heyday not long ago that included Fresno State, Hawaii, Boise State, Nevada, San Jose State, Rice, SMU, etc. Now there is Chicago State, Seattle U, UMKC, UT Rio Grande Valley, Utah Valley, Grand Canyon, CSU Bakersfield, and New Mexico State. What the ?????? Seriously, if NMSU can't thrive in that conference, they have major issues. I know the immediate region is sparse but what the heck are they doing there? I remember when their basketball program was a perennial winner and opponents hated going to their place.
Oops. Talk about getting sidetracked.

Did I read correctly that all scholarship athletes at FIU will be getting a $6k stipend? If that is true, that could certainly put a dent in the college bill, especially one as low as FIU's.

Guess that's one for the Bill Wilhelm coaching tree.
That post was a million years ago.
No fooling guys, new coach means business, been out recruiting for months.
My buddies kid plays there and from what he has said all the kids seem to really like the new coach and the energy he has brought.
Coaching turnover = uncertainty for players, period. Huge recruiting classes equals uncertainty for current and prospective players. Most kids would breath a sigh of relief when they commit to a school, but a 15+ player recruiting class (unless it's heavy in pitchers, which is likely the case) should make players tread cautiously. Unless the school has committed scholarship dollars, I would be very nervous if I was part of that recruiting class. Wonder how rostered players are feeling about the size of the recruiting classes at these schools?
Nothing is going to change the size of the recruiting classes, thats just a fact of life these days. As long as players committ earlier and earlier the class sizes won't change whether it be a new coach or not.
One more thing, if you are going to be a senior who has never really contributed, at this point you never will.
Its not about being a good guy, its about winning

Agreed! I think it's gets lost sometimes that this is how these guys feed their families.
Universities are starting to invest more into their baseball programs so the demand for a speedy ROI is real.

You are soooo right. Lots of money being spent on facilities and its not for giggles. Its serious stuff. ADs dont fool around anymore , so although you give out athletic $$ to some, others you bring in as walk ons on academic aid and as the saying goes for the upper classmen, may the best man win.

In related news my son has a full tuition/books merit award from FIU if any staff happen to be reading...
Well he should go for a fall try out!

I guess we will see what happens. It's his safety school apparently.
He got a very generous merit award from Nova and an invitation to interview for their President's scholarship. He's going to apply to their dual enroll program as weii which would guarantee him a med school seat. If he gets that, it will pretty much guarantee he won't play in college. I'm totally cool with that.
Realistically the odds are a million times better that he will be performing surgery on an MLB pitcher than actually become one.
Nova has a great medical school program.
Very good baseball program too!
