Watched the live BCS thing, as there was nothing better to do. As much as I don't think Michigan should play them, Florida is there because the voters don't want a rematch, not because the voters find them to be a better football team, which I think is wrong. Hopefully this will end the whining and complaining from SEC fans, but at the same time I don't think it really matters because whoever got selected just gets to be beaten to a pulp by Ohio.

Thoughts?

First let me say I am not an SEC fan. However I am not so sure that Ohio State is going to win this game. Ohio State and Michigan are both great teams this year but outside the Big 10 the best team Ohio State played was Texas who has turned out not to be such an elite team and outside the Big 10 the best team Michigan has played is Notre Dame who has not been so elite either. All the Ohio State - Michigan game proved was that they are the best in the Big 10. Having them play each other again would only prove that again. If Ohio State and Michigan win their respective bowl games then I will be sold that they are the two best teams. Having champions from two different strong conferences play adds just a little more validity to the game. In my opinion Florida will be the best defense Ohio State plays. Ohio State will be the best offense Florida plays. I think OSU will win but I don't think it will be as easy as people are already saying.

It's old rehash but until a playoff occurs the football national championship is still mythical.

P.S. I dislike the BCS concept which up front eliminates 50% of the teams from participating and now will let one "little guy" in if they can crack the good old boy voting system. Go Boise State!!!

So we have the BCS garbage, now with an extra "national championship" a week after the rest of the bowl games. Why, with the BCS garbage, are the participants in that game decided a month in advance? Why not take the top four teams, already seeded 1-4 by the BCS poll thing (however it's figured out) and have them play in 2 of the "BCS Bowl games." 1 vs. 4, 2 vs. 3. Then the winners go on a week later to play in the "national championship game."

Yeah it means that there'll be questions over a 4th and 5th team every year, but it makes a team have to perform against another top team two weeks in a row for that number one ranking. The NCAA does it in every other sport, so why not football? Yeah, there's money at stake, but I think that this would bring in just as much.
Michigan is a much better football team than Florida.

In 96 Florida State was forced to play Florida a second time for the NC( after beating them the first time).

Warrick Dunn and 3 other top starters were injured and could not play. OSU has no such problem.

Considering the first game, Michigan would have been a better match-up.

That is way too easy and makes to much sense.

I would top that off by saying that in your scenario the championsip game is played where both teams play for "expenses" only. All the proceeds of that game go to athletic charities. Now there's a feather in the NCAA hat.

I'd forgotten who else was actually in the 1996 game, well not really, but I thought FSU fans would have. Smile

Unless it comes down to kicking, the Gators will make it interesting. Actually, they have a 4th down freshman QB who no one can stop running the ball. OSU gave up 39 to UM at home in THE game. If they give up 39 to UF they lose by at least 3 touchdowns. UFL 28 OSU 21.

I've seen both michigan and florida play plenty of times and also OSU. i went to the SEC championship game. FL shouldnt have even won that game. if arkansas doesnt fumble on the one for a TD Arkansas will win. and theres no way florida keeps up with OSU. people will say FLorida is fast and can handle OSU's defense, but thats not true. Michigan had the best run defense and was a legit run stopping D along with a very good pass D. look what happened to them..its not a case of a great O vs a bad D. its the case that OSU has the best offense in the country. mark my words...OSU will win by at least 14.

I would take the top 5 in the SEC, each year, against the top 5 in the Big Ten/11.

Beenthere,

Good thing you haven't bet on that for the last four years. Wink

In the last 4 years the SEC and Big Ten have played each other in 11 Bowl games.

Big 10 teams have won 7
SEC teams have won 4

The teams that played in those bowl games are…

Big Ten teams in those bowl games

Wisconsin 3
Iowa 3
Minnesota 2
Purdue 1
Michigan 1
Penn State 1

Note – Top team Ohio State didn’t play against SEC teams in Bowl games and Michigan only played once.

These are the Big Ten teams that did not play SEC teams in a Bowl Game.

Ohio State, Michigan State, Northwestern, Indiana, Illinois

SEC teams in those bowl games

Florida 3
Auburn 3
Georgia 2
Alabama 1
LSU 1
Arkansas 1

Note – These are the SEC teams that did not play Big Ten teams in a bowl game.

Kentucky, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Mississippi State

So who will win the big game?

You never know, but based on the above, you would have to give it to Ohio State. But things never seem to work out the way it looks on paper.

It does seem like the SEC was the toughest conference this year. (from top to bottom) But it has looked that way in other years, too. Could the Big Ten be under rated?
I am a SEC fan, but I agree with Kmart completely! I think Florida has a terrific team, including speed. Don't think they're better than Michigan though. They're not truly the #2 team in the nation. I pick OSU for what it's worth.

LOL KY doesn't play anyone normally in a bowl game!
You can argue all day long about who is the better team or who is more deserving of playing OSU etc etc etc. The bottom line is untill there is a playoff it will be like this year after year after year. Both Florida and Michigan deserve to have a chance to win it. The bottom line is the system is just what it is a system. The only true way to decide is on the field and not in polls and computers.
If Florida plays like they did against Tennessee, Auburn, Georgia, South Carolina, or Florida State, then I really don't think they stand a chance. The Big 11 has statistically proven it can hold its own against the SEC in bowl games of the recent past, but luckily judgements can be placed aside after this game is played as we will finally have a definitive answer to whether or not the SEC can hold its own in the big game.
The SEC is BY FAR the best conference in college football. There is no off week in the SEC. Besides OSU Michigan really hasn't played anyone. Yes they put up a good fight against OSU but they lost. Why put a team in the national championship against a team they have already lost to. Florida will be much more prepared for this game considering they have had to play TOUGH opponents every week. People are going to be suprised when Florida wins this game, BIG! OSU will go down like Oklahoma did against USC a few years back. This is the beginning of a Florida dynasty with Tebow there for 3 more years!
I have a nice solution for the problem. Tweak the system and put in a rule that if you don't win your own conference then you can't play for the title.

There is no way to compare conferences unless they play each other. It would be an injustice to leave an SEC winner at 12-1 out of the game to give it to a person who did not win their own conference. It would have been easy for Michigan to make it in. They should have beaten OSU. I personally feel like the Big 10 should have been called the Big 2 and the Little 9 this year.

Florida did have the toughest strength of schedule. There tends to be a trend towards not rewarding good defenses in college the way you do in the NFL. People tend to give high scoring teams the edge. Which team is better? A team who wins 42-39 or 21-18? hard to compare.

I would prefer a playoff system, but it ain't happening.

I hate the arrogance of the whole BCS concept. This group got together, declared themselves the elite and now rag on each other and have a fit when someone not in their little group gets in one of their games. Nevertheless here is part of my reasoning of why Ohio State and Michigan should not replay or why I don't think Michigan has earned the game.

The BCS conferences are ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Big East, Pac 10, SEC and Notre Dame.

Between them Ohio Stae and Michigan played Notre Dame, 1 mid level Big East team, 1 bottom level SEC team and 1 top third Big 12 team. To me this is not a sufficient sample of play to limit the participants to the Big 10 and eliminate five other conferences. Because the champions of the Pac 10, ACC, Big East and Big 12 as well as Notre Dame have multiple losses it seems logical that Florida should go ahead of those other champions. We could argue forever here which team is better between Michigan and Florida but they have not played each other and they do not play each other's schedule. Relegating the championship to one conference does not seem right to me.

Another thought on the asinine BS(BCS logic). Can't have a playoff because it takes "student athletes" away from their studies. What a joke!

Ohio State started practice August 8th and played their first game September 2nd.(less than 4 weeks/25 days)
They played Michigan November 18th and now will play Florida January 8th(over 7 weeks/50 days!!!!) Think about it- they could play 7 games in that time period! To put this into perspective it would be like the
NCAA basketball season ending Feb 28th and then not playing again until April 20th. Or Baseball ending May 31st and not playing again until July 15th.

When the consensus #1 team beat the consensus #2 team on Nov 18th to end their season undefeated why in the heck do you need to choose a lower ranked team and now say they should have a shot at the National Championship Title? Did not the top two teams just play? This could go on all through January--keep picking teams to try to knock off Ohio State. It only makes sense if there is a playoff system and it should start immediately--not 7 1/2 weeks after the season ends.

BTW These two teams-OSU and Florida will be different teams on Jan 8th. It's a brand new season. JMHO.
