Midlo is right. Reference MLB rulebook 10.11 on scoring assists.
This has happened twice to the San Diego Padres in the past couple years. Both times it was an infielder ranging back and flipping or deflecting the ball up in the air for the outfielder to catch.
take the same situation and throw in a tag-up at third.
I seem to remember that there is a difference as to when the runner can leave the base, depending on who makes contact...something like, if it's an infielder, runner has to wait until catch is made, but if it's an OF, runner can go at first touch. Am I recalling this properly? If so, in this instance, runner can leave as soon as SS touched the ball?
I alway's keep a score book with me at game's. I'll usually score most of the game's. But there's no way I could remember or figure out every single play and right it down. There so much more to scoring a game then I ever thought. I really keep the book to keep my mouth shut. It help's, Your more worried about writing in your book then what happened on the Field. In the definitions section of the OBR (rule 2.00) the following language appears to describe a "catch"...
"A catch is legal if the ball is finally held by any fielder, even though juggled, or held by another fielder before it touches the ground. Runners may leave their bases the instant the first fielder touches the ball."
I'm not sure if that still applies if it's just one player juggling the ball. Perhaps others can contribute here. We had that happen in fall ball. LF misjudged a fly, moved backwards and tipped the ball off his glove, then his hand, then pinned it against his chest as he hit the ground...a real circus catch. Our runner tagged at 1B and left at first touch. Other team appealed and ump called him out. He said you have to wait until the ball is actually caught. I don't know if that's right or wrong.

I have used this for years - it works and keeps me out of trouble with my son.
The ump was incorrect. On a fly ball a runner can leave his base on the first touch by any fielder. It doesn't matter when or who eventually makes the catch.
