Flying with equipment

We traveled with equipment last summer. Metal cleats are OK to carry on, bats aren't. Interestingly, the thing they wanted to take out of the carry-on bag to inspect at every checkpoint was baseballs.

Pack the glove and cleats in a carry on. That way, if the airline loses the bat bag or it doesn't make it to your destination with you, your player has the two most important items with him. He can always borrow a bat and helmet in a pinch.

Yep - that's exactly what we did.

I would not even try to avoid checking bags. Airline security is getting less and less forgiving and severity varies airport to airport. What passes the first inspector gets taken by the next. Check anything metal including spikes... especially if they screw in.

Check your bags. Everything except the gloves. Some airlines like JetBlue have free bag check.

It's a hassle for sure, but there are alternatives. Of course, some drawbacks do exist!

When my son needed to fly back from Ft Myers to Nshville to workout for scouts he checked all his equipment. We had told him to carry on his catcher's mitt but he forgot and packed it instead. our logic was that we could buy him new equipment at the last minute in the event airline lost his luggage. He didn't tell us he had checked his mitt until he landed! Luckily, this time, the airline didn't lose his luggage.
