Let me start off by saying I am a power contact hitter. My problem in my swing is that when I make contact with the ball, my swing seems to stop. I would like some suggestions on how to make myself follow through. I can sort of do it in the cage, but the layoff from not playing last year has messed up. Thanks for any help I can get.

I would start with practicing good mechanics infront of the mirror. Watch for your follow through. Do it hundreds of times per day. It will eventually become muscle memory, and you will find yourself following through when you hit live. By the way, this obviously is not a substitute for cage work or anything like that, I do them both.

Believe it or not many great HS/college power hitters do this and get away with it at these levels.

My questions to you before I make my recommendation>

Are you planning on taking baseball to the professional level?

Are you 100% devoted to baseball and counting on your ability to get you college scholarship if not pro contract?

Follow through...

If you coil and fully transfer momentum at contact and release the barrel out front you will see a better follow through. Are you taking the rotation forward so that the knob gets past your lead side before release?

If you stay on your back foot and hinge your rear knee while weight is still on it then you will release the bat barrel at about the belly button and it will fizzle through contact. If you back side is collapsing at contact your follow through will be bad
AKB - There are so many ways to accomplish a single thing and I'm sure that will be evident in the responses you get. Debates about hitting always tend to crack me up because everybody has an opinion. But you have to sort through all of that and find what works for YOU.

Having said that.....If I understand what you're saying, your swing would stop with the barrel pointing at the pitcher? My son had a similar problem. Not on every swing but here and there. His hitting coach had him overemphasize his follow through by bringing the barrel all the way around and hitting his back (probably more like his right shoulder - he's RH) with the barrel of the bat. This simple little drill worked wonders.
