A player a yr ahead of my son never played a V game jr. year. No nibbles from colleges at all. Summer between jr. & Senior year, dad takes little brother down to Perennial Top 5 team in the country's camp. Big brother comes along as a college visit. Dad says " you're down here, you might as well do the Camp too" he does. He described his performance to my son this way. During games he hit 3 hr's and was on base every time and his pop times were by far significantly lower than his personal bests. That weekend, 2 kids decommit . Coaches now are interested. Show him around and offer a preferred walk on spot. He accepts. Finishes HS season. (Don't want to be negative, but there was no fanfare or articles ) befitting a kid trying to make that team. Goes to school in summer. The scholarshipped player in his position is arrested for a serious charge. This kid is then given that scholarship. Who knows what the future holds, but I would never bet against the kid. He is a freshman this year.

Great story. Thanks for sharing. Shows what you can do at college camps when you don't take it so seriously.
Love the story. Making your own luck is part of life....no doubt about it.
Many different paths in this journey
Stepping up when given an opportunity is a huge part of life... And Baseball
Parenting is similar. Must be present to participate. Similar to Basketball: "can't score without the ball"
leave no stone unturned. Good stuff
None of it would have ever happened if the kid didn't "show up." Sounds like he could have stopped showing up for baseball after not making V his Jr year? Or stayed home when his little brother was visiting the school? Or not participated in the camp? Etc. Etc. But sounds like he "kept showing up."
Great story that sounds like it may have a few more chapters in it?
"80% of life is simply showing up." -some playwright
"The other 30% is working your tail off once you get there." - Me
Yogi Berra couldn’t have said it better.

Timing is a huge part of everything. How many times has an MLB team gotten hot at just the right time? This kid put it together at the right time, and maybe his adversity led him to become more determined and focused then he was prior to not making varsity? Good for him to keep working, and as someone else said, making his own luck. Really cool story!
Great story. You never know, right place, right time. Even with life you can meet someone on the golf course and just by talking it changes your career or outlook on life. I firmly believe with baseball things happened for a reason with son, both good and bad. Many coincidences happened along his journey. Trust in the Process, Trust in Him!

Thanks for sharing this. Will help me and others feel better about "showing up" and dealing with bad hotels, bad coffee, stress, $$, etc. What's left unsaid is that the opportunistic player had his grades and behavior in order, too. Otherwise, someone else gets that phone call.
So if 80% of life is showing up, 100% of life is showing up with your *$#(&@ together. Not very catchy, but it's true. Thanks again,
Great story! Wishing him much success!
Just curious - it does not sound like it, but just wondering if the Top 5 program was after the little brother, and as long as the older brother was reasonably good enough, to fill a need, they took him which might/will help them lock up little brother also? That does not take away from the point of the story (luck, showing up, having your sh** together, etc. all is essential) but just wondering if that had anything to do with it. It is a great story in any event!!

Exactly. Recruited = skill + passion + persistence + exposure + luck. The equation hasn't changed in 10 years.
