Former McKinney star Matt Lipka tearing up the Gulf Coast League

Rainer Sabin / Reporter Dallas News

In high school, Matt Lipka could do it all. He hit for average, was a threat on the basepaths and fielded his position with ease. In short, he was dynamic. But how well would his considerable skill set translate to the professional ranks?
Amazingly well, it appears. Lipka, who was selected by the Atlanta Braves with the 35th overall pick in the MLB Draft in June, is off to a flying start. The former McKinney star is batting .352 with one home run and 21 RBIs. He has also swiped 12 bases.
Lipka, who seemed to have the mental makeup to thrive in the dog-eat-dog world of the minors, is tearing up the Gulf Coast League and appears to expedited his ascension to a higher level. Before he left for rookie ball, Lipka expressed excitement about his future.
"Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of making it to the major leagues," he said. "And now I am going to get to play the game I love every day. I want to get after it."
So far, he is making the most of his opportunity.

One thing that does not get enough press is Matt’s work ethics. This young man is the hardest working ball player I have ever seen. He is loaded with natural athletic ability but you add ability with his relentless work habits and you have a guy that will be successful in whatever he does. Good luck Matt, stay healthy!
