My son had a call on a play I don't understand. Maybe someone can explain -- Playing 3b, fields hard ground ball in the dirt in front of the bag, steps as he's picking it up and right foot is in foul territory as he makes throw to 1st for the out. The hit was called a foul ball, though it was fair in front of the base by 1 - 2 feet. My son's momentum charging the ball carried him partially foul. Is it because the play was in front of the base? Did the umpire just not see where the ball was when he got it?
Thanks--

In a one man game..(and I have done my share) you have multiple responsibilities.....first off is the calling of the pitch...then any subsequent action....a call of fair or foul down the lines from 60-90 plus feet away will have an amount of estimation.....

Basically you get the best judgment on that particular play...the one man umpire crew can not accept outside info or help so a modicum of error is possible.

I believe you have hit the nail on the head when you state that that may be why the coach didn't say anything.....'

It is hard to do a game well with one man...even on the small diamond......At my sons college double header this past sunday, they only had one umpire who did both games behind the plate......... 90 ft bases, college level play.....not a peep out of any player or coach on any play or call......

We had an unfortunate injury to a plate umpire last night in a pro A league. He took a 98 MPH fastball to the cup. They took him to the hospital and the BU had to finish the game in one man.

Good Lord, where was the catcher? Perhaps he set up outside and the PU stayed inside, exposing too much of himself?
