Yes foul if it hit him while still in the box.  If ump called him out at 1st, then he must have judged that the ball didn't make contact with him.  Sometimes a tough angle for the plate ump... But field ump can usually get it right if asked.

It's hard to tell for sure -- you (the ump) are tracking the ball into the glove and all of a sudden it's down there -- and often the contact is away from you.

 

This call is missed (both wrongly called foul and wrongly allowed to stand) in the pros -- so don't expect me to get it right. lol.

 

I think that the rule should be changed so that the ball is still live when it hits the batter in this situation -- and becomes fair or foul based on what happens next (where it goes, where it's touched, etc. -- just like any batted ball).  It will never happen though.
