For those players and parents experiencing Freshman H.S. ball for the first time. Let me tell you, be prepared for many cold afternoons filled with alot of questionable pitching and defense. Alot of the teams will have pitchers throwing from 60 feet on the mound for the first time. That equals alot of walks and many 3 hours games. Depending on the school most of the top players will be moved up or should be starting at the Sophomore level. Good luck to everyone starting their HS career. The best advice I could give the better players is to be patient and just continue to work on your own game.

Lineshot, there's alot of players that wil make the Freshman team that have only played local rec ball. Let's face it when schools take 30 players on Freshman A and B. The talent pool is going to be limited. That's why alot of Freshman baseball is like watching paint dry. There's still alot of talented players that will be playing Freshman ball, that will be the future of their school. That's why I said keep things realistic and continue to work on getting better. Let's hope for some good early season weather. Those 40 degree games in April can really be tough.
Hawk88, right on. Our Freshman team has about 7 guys that played "select" and the rest played rec. I think a lot of communities are that way. We have 3 that played "select" that aren't with the freshmen and will play JV. One of those is getting a great shot at winning a varsity spot.

Yes, the games are long and the pitching is terrible. Our kids pitched at 58 during the summer. They used -5 bats. They played 86 foot bases. You are going to see incrediable things. Take along your sense of humor. We have a very good coach down there that has tremendous patience and the kids love playing for him. He'll teach the game and do what is right by them to enable them to compete for a spot next year. That's what freshman ball is or should be about. JMHO!
I gotta disagree with Hawk but it might be because of our school. Sandburg is a great baseball school and even our freshmen team is pretty good. Only one guy on our team HASN'T played travel. We actually look like a travel team or even 2 travel teams if we split the team in half. Plus our pitchers all have pitched before and are all used to the distance.

Not sure about how other schools are though. I woudln't be surprised if that's how it is.
